I am thinking about viewing a horse thats for sale (it will be my first horse!)
He is an ex racer 16.3 5yo - Raced twice & retired a year ago (sound, too slow).
Going quite well on the flat & popped a couple of jumps.
He comes with absolutley nothing (no tack etc)
His only problem is that he windsucks at feedtimes, owner says he's not stressy, not been ill etc.
I've been told an exracer that windsucks isn't worth anymore than 1800.
He is advertised for 500 more than that. I just wanted to get an idea of what other people think he would be worth before I go see him!! Help!

Go and see and try him and decide first if you like him. Ask to see him in the stable and move well away and watch for at least 15 minutes - don't let them hastle you. Make note of what else is stabled at the time? Are there horses moving around/stabled next to him?

Then if you like him make an offer for him but drop it by at least 500 first. I never offer the asking price anyway but wouldn't get stressed about the price of an animal until I had tried it first anyway.

Hi, i personally wouldnt suggest an ex racer for a 1st horse. I personally would not touch a windsucker either!

if you must have him then i would go no more than £700.

i honestly wouldnt reccomend an x racer as a first horse, yes he is very overpriced, also the fact he does wind suck suggests he may be a stressy sort, again this can be a right pain in the butt.

honestly if it is your first horse at least look for something that has been to a few shows, or done a fun ride etc. something that basically has a bit of milage under its belt.

I'm kinda with jhoward on this, although my 1st horse could've easily been an ex racer, I worked in the racing industry for many years before I bought my 1st horse. So having no idea of your experience I wouldn't say 'No don't do it' for sure :D
If you really are set on an ex racer, why not think about re-homing from 1 of the centres that specialises in rehablition of them such as Moorcroft

Deffo overpriced - take him to auction he wouldn't make 300 quid

Not ideal for a first horse

In this day and age you can get something really belting for 1800 never mind 2300 !

Good luck in your search x

Agree with above ,if he had been reschooled and out doing another job he may be worth it.As a 1st horse he would be a big gamble and the windsucking would make it very difficult for you to sell on.
There are a lot of nice horses out there for £2300ish. at the moment.

another one here agreeing an exracer isa bad first horse. I know there are dope-on-a-rope ones, but the majority aren't and are extremely difficult. I have horses thirty years and I find my new exracer a handful at times. I def wouldn't recommend it as a first horse at all.

For an untrained windsucker that horse sounds massively overpriced. Take someone very experienced with you if you view it. Often they are fantastic on the ground and on a first try at a yard, but take them out to a new yard, new routinue and new owner and you can have a nightmare on your hands if you don't know what you're doing.

Just to put another thought out there, I wouldn't touch a 16.3hh (maybe more like 17hhs) ex racer with someone elses barge pole! I can count on one hand the number of bigger horses who've stayed sound, when you throw the breaking and racing early into the mix, the likelihood of long term soundness reduces...
