Do you run in overreach boots? Have you ever had a horse overreach?

My horse usually wears overreach boots, but got them out on Sunday to put on and the washing machine (?) had ripped one of them so badly it was unusable and all the other 'available' ones were too big to fit. So ran her without and no had problems (phew!)

I'm planning on getting replacements for her next event, just in case!

I have run without (in the SJ part rather than SJ), but would rather not. My OH's old racehorse turned eventer had a huge 3" overreach scar across the back of one front foot which must have taken months to heal. If a small boot can prevent that - then why not.

I like professionals choice ones, but other mare has had a variety of neoprene warpround ones all prices, so the expensive ones aren't always the best ones.

I don't normally put any sort of boots on for anything, but after another lesson with John Steels at VV he told me off for not using them and sent OH off the the trailer to fetch a full set. He said my horse is worth far too much money to risk an injury - as would any other horse be.

Regarding over reaching, Mick over reached playing in the field a few years ago, it was quite deep and he was lame with it. I had the vet after a few days and she said it really needed a stitch but I had left it too long. It took ages to heal and was tender for weeks.

So, Mick is out at the weekend fully booted.

Toto is ridden most of the time in over-reach boots, even for schooling + walking hacks. We had a nasty fall a few years ago when we both ended up on the floor, he was ok but managed to over-reach, fortunately it wasn't too bad and healed pretty quickly!
He has plain rubber velcro cheapy over-reach boots for in the sand school and a nice pair of thick neoprene Roma 'pebble' boots for xc and jumping etc.

I usually put overreach boots on for most activites, but especially jumping and XC. I use the rubber velcro ones, as i have a fear XC that if he was to stand on the back of a neoprene one it wouldn't break and he'd go ar$e over t*t, whereas i think the rubber ones would either lose a chunk, or be ripped off.

i only have one who i put over reach boots on (i sj)
she tries very hard bless her, and her legs go all ways. the bigger the occasion the more the feet go allways!
at scope one year she trod on one of her front feet through a rubber over reach boot and caused it quite a big hole on the coronet band. she was fine at the time, but as it grew down the hoof about 6 months later, the hole was quite big and she was came up lame after jumping, and only was sound once it had been filled. we had to turn her away until the hole had completley grown out. nightmare!
needless to say she always jumps in them now - either the thick material ones or the veredus ones.
i will put them on gormless babies too if they're a bit erratic with their feet.

I always go xc in overreach boots- Queenie has managed to destroy about 3 pairs, and I dread to think what would have happened if she wasn't wearing them and she did that to herself rather than the boots!!!
