I went to see my youngster last night and had overreached on the side of his heel. It was quite deep, like a cut. My no skin flaps. I gave it a good clean with hibiscrub and then put purple spray on it and turned him out. His field has got quite short grass and is not muddy at all. Went I went to see him this morning, the scabs had come off a bit due to the wet grass and it was weeping a bit. I gave it another clean and put more purple spray on. What cream/gel should I get to protect it? Also would it be worth getting overreach boots so he doesnt catch it and opens the cut more while it heals? I be a bit worried that the boots could rub but the cut is quite low. Can you bandage that area? He is not lame in the slightest but a bit sensitive when I put purple spray on it.

I am also a bit worried that it will scar as he is going to be a dressage horse hopefully Would it be worth getting manuka honey once it heals up a bit?

Sorry for the long post. Please help anyone?

Given that you have cleaned it thoroughly I would avoid cleaning it too much any more - especially with hibbi scrub - it can be quite an irritant and you can cause more problems than you solve ;)

I wouldn't bother with over-reach boots - dirt will get up inside them, rub against the wound and cause infection.

I would personally hose the wound off twice a day every day, possibly wring a clean sponge of warm salty water out over the wound to 'flush it' and apply some tea tree cream (can get it in boots or tesco) Its a great natural astringent and will draw any nasties out of the wound. If after say 5 days of doing this there is no swelling or heat and the wound seems to be healing, I would leave well alone and let nature do it's stuff. :)

Yes Manuka Honey (get the "proper" stuff that has the Unique Manuka Factor mark) is pretty good & Aloe Vera is also good too - both can often help with reducing scarring too.

Back from horsepital today - youngster had bad overreach which turned into cellulites. Has had cast on for 2 wks with manuka honey dressing and noradine. Cast off today and fantastic healing - still needs manuka honey dressing and box rest for another wk but amazing results.

Get the Manuka Honey on it straight away and bandage if you can - just make sure that the bandage will stay above and below the wound. Purple Spray can prevent the closure as the spray seals each side of the wound and prevents it knitting well.

Wash with saline 1 teaspoon to a pint - hibiscrub is not really meant to be used on an open wound - it is for sterilising a surgeons hands prior to surgery. The vets are really naughty to prescribe it for open wounds.
