Murphy did this last night, he does over reach and wears boots for it, just the rubber type. Is it worth investing in a different pair (is so which are best) or is it just something I need to watch out for?

Thanks

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr my friend, come under my wing !

I have the worst horse for this, the only thing that has worked so far is, a new farrier and roma over reach boots, i have tried every over reach boot, every turn out boot on the market, i have found that the rubber ones are not heavy enough, or long enough !

This is only what i have found, every horse is different !

Rubber over reach boots should be fine, you can get all different types and the neoprene ones are good but quite expensive.

Mine wear over reach boots 24/7 (apart from when they do a dressage test!) as im paranoid about them pulling shoes off b4 an event!

My boy managed to pull a shoe off with big think neoprene overreach boots on (and he is barefoot on the back!), so it may not solve the problem! I'm sure they offer more protection against injury though (and have lasted more than a week, unlike the rubber ones!!)

My cob is a expert at shoe removal.......I have the added problem of big feet and the best I found was the WOOF overeach boots due to the lengh of them pricey at £28 per pair, but , have worked well!

My horse used to do this all the time even with overreach boots on and he's barefoot on the back!
My farrier says its because he's young and will probably grow out of it, and he's right because he's doing it less and less now. I might even keep a whole pair of shoes on for 6 weeks this time!

How old is your horse?

It will be more likely to happen whatever over-reach boots you put on if the breakover of the front feet is being delayed by the foot being out of balance. The best person to speak to would be your farrier - it could well be worth trying him with an early breakover shoe. Does he do it all the time or is it worse as he's approaching his next shoeing appointment?

Hey CotswoldSJ - I have never seen those before - they look brilliant! I have a 20 yr old TB with navicular who has to wear egg bars and as a consequence is forever ripping them off - you may well have just saved me a fortune in retrieving my farriers' wonderful remidial shoes from the far flung reaches of the field - THANK YOU !

One of mine used to do this, and take huge chunks of wall off at the same time. Which was set us down the barefoot route, and turned out to be the best thing that we did. It is not for the faint hearted though, as they need lots of conditioning work with pads etc, feet soaking or scrubbing and careful attention to diet etc. In our case it has been more than worth it but I appreciate that it isn't practical for everybody.
