Right, finally getting around to writing a report…
Went to Overton on Sunday for my first ever ride in a point to point.:D Decided to declare for the restricted, though there ended up being 17 runners in it.:(
Hated the waiting to get on, but once on I felt a lot better. There are some funny pictures of me in the paddock looking very white!:D
Clever horse won the turnout, I was stressing about my tail plait as he wouldn’t stay still when I plated him up, but the £20 will allow me to be able to afford to eat this week
He was very strong going down to start and down at the start there was a bay mare hellbent on killing every other horse and actually double barrelled the favourite.
Managed to keep out of everyone’s way, though going to the first fence I was totally blocked in and it wasn’t a long run to it. Left it to Monty . The field then spread out a bit and I managed to get up in a bout 3rd/4th where I was told to be. He suits being in front but the pace set was stupidly fast. My style over the first few fences left a lot to be desired but I managed to stay on!:D Next thing I knew it was the open ditch which Monty made short work of. Coming round again someone hit the deck on the horse in front of me but luckily they got up and got well out of the way before I got there. The next fence Monty so a stupidly long stride and went for it. Coming round again we lost a bit of our pace. We then hit the part of the course where the ground got very heavy which he wasn’t travelling in and started to lose touch with the field as a couple of people behind me had pulled up. I ended up pulling up in the heavy ground. In retrospect I shouldn’t of pulled up and got after him and made him finished so this was bad judgement on my part.:o
I really enjoyed and would love another go. Horse came back without of scratch on him and is fresh enough so he will probably be racing a fortnight at Corbridge again.
Here are some pictures, I look like I am going show jumping in a few:o. Please feel free to critique my style and tips welcome but it was my first ride so please don’t be nasty!
:D:D

What picture do you think I should buy if any?

*Gamebird gives DB a round of applause*.

Bliimin' well done. I wouldn't be too worried about pulling up. As someone who regularly deal with the aftermath of horses which should have been pulled up but weren't I'd rather you did it unneccesarily any day of the week. As you get more rides you'll be able to judge when he needs a slap and when to go home early.

As for the photos - well, dur! Of course you need a pic. I'd get 85, 86 and 97 and do some sort of clever 3 photos in a frame thingy if I were you.

Well done again! :D
And rather you than me!! He looks super horse. I would work on putting your stirrups up a few holes over time.
I would buy the first grossick pic and agree you HAVE to get one. A real achievement and definitely needs a picture to show your grandkids ;)

Massive well done, those fences look really, really serious!!!!! Not enough money in the world to make me go over one of them never mind the whole lot!

At the time you decided to stop so that's the right decision and both you and horse got home safely. You're better off stopping a moment too soon, than leaving it a moment too late!

Blimey! Well done! You are either very brave or completely crazy, and I haven't yet worked out which!

I prefer the first photographer to the grossick ones, but they are all great. :)

Thanks people. I feld bad about pulling up but when he loses touch with the field he starts doing stupid jumps, and he doesn't suit that ground. Anyways I will know for next time :)
Not sure if I am crazy... :D
I have always wanted to try it and really enjoyed it.

Well done you he looks fab! And better to pull up too soon than too late. You have to bu a pic....in your list i'd buy the 4rth, 5th and last!

Congrats, very well done you. I can guess how you feel as I'll never forget the enormous grin on R's face when she did her first p2p on her 16th Birthday.
I agree with GB about 85, 86 and 87 and don't be in too much of a hurry to shorten your stirrups - R's Dad rode with such long stirrups that the other jockeys used to tease him but he rarely came off ;) ;D

Well done!
Def nothing wrong with pulling up when the going gets rough, especially on your first p2p - next time you'll heva better feel for it.

You're a LOT braver than me!

I know my stirrups are long, might go up a hole next time but I would rather not fly off. As my friend said Ride long, live long.

The curse of Novice riders' races are those who think they can mimic AP, right down to the stirrup length. The second the horse pecks, off they go . You beat me to it with the 'ride long, live long', but I can usually pick out the jockeys in the paddock that have no chance of surviving a minor blunder.

And I've never ridden in a race but when I come off the gallops to school over fences I put my stirrups down!

Oooh, rather you than me, you're very brave. I mean what's that all about, trying to jump stuff with other people trying to jump it at the same time? That's just crazy. ;)

I like 85 and 86 by the way, but as you won 20 squids and food is a non-essential item, why not blow it all on a few and have a montage. :p

I think thats the worst bit, not be able to see the fence! And had a nasty moment when the horse next to me didn't hold its line a drifted right into at the fence. Luckily my horse is honest enough to jump right next to the wing. Phew!

Will buy some photos tomorrow :)

You could possibly beat me into jumping those fences on a very experienced horse with no one else around, but in a race - No chance!

Well impressed, definitely think you need a montage, jockeys live on cotton wool and water anyway, don't they ;) :D :D

wow well done!!! one of our horses went to its first p2p of the season on sunday, and it made me want to have a go so much! Loved being groom and walking him round the paddock etc, but it looked like such fun! Really well done as its tough out there! Just out of interest - is there any chance you could PM me to give me a bit of an insite into how pointing works? e.g. the classes, weights, how you get into it etc :) Going to ask my boss baout it saturday, but a bit of info would be great so i dont sould like a total numpty to him ;)

Haha Baydale that's what Richard Carruthers always says to me, I actually get written in his diary as crazy racehorse lady!

Domino brown, well done, 17 runners must have been like a bun fight! I like picture 86, and I agree with the others about your stirrups, don't worry too much about the show jumping style creeping in, it will improve over time, my first pictures were positively scary!
And as Gambird says, better to pull up and live to fight another day.
Good luck for Corbridge (for the journey there as much as anything!)

Well done :)

I am normally therre watching and helping but i was moving my horses :)

They are having another one at some point I think, the ground is usually a lot better but you cant help all the rain.

Glad you had fun :)
