Hi all, first post in a while but I'm sure the sages out there will be full of wisdom :D

I'm off to see a horse tomorrow. It looks almost like what I want but not quite. I still like the look of it though, and figure it might be better in the flesh.

The ad stats £xxxx OVNO. How close is "VN"? If I offered 10% below would that be insulting?if I'm totally honest it's slightly over my budget but it's been on sale for over a month and I think it does need some work.

if i offered 10-15% below asking, that would be what I think it was worth, but i don't want to offend the seller as she seems very genuine (from what you can tell over the phone!)

If you like the horse and want to make an offer, offer what you would be happy to pay, I never like people to justify it by criticising my horse too much, the more they run it down the more I feel they either do not really want it or they are just plain rude especially if I know there are no issues and that it will fly through a vetting:D

10% is fair, they can only say no, if you cannot pay more because you dont have it they will lose the sale, I am more likely to do a deal if the buyer is honest and also offers an experienced home with longer term aims for the horse, with options to keep in touch, even good dealers like the odd positive email.

If you want the horse and its over budget, just be honest. Tell them what your top budget is and that is all you can afford. But, you really want the horse.
Saves any insults and owner sees you being honest. Good luck

I always work out what I am happy to pay for the horse I explain why I put that value on it and tell people what I am prepared to pay if they don't accept I will walk away.I don't barter or off a silly price and get talked up .
The important thing to you is how much you want to pay of course you need to be fair and understand the market.

Go and see the horse and be honest with the people about how much you can afford. Tell them about the kind of home you can offer and your experience. Some people would rather sell their horse to a great home and take less money.

I advertised my youngster for £1400 and took £1000 as that is all my buyer had but she has given him a great home ad we still stay in touch. I am glad i sold him for £400 less knowing the home he's gone to rather than holding out for the full asking price and never know where he is now.

Also depends on how desperate they are to sell.

Agree with this people are very affected by the home I often think I get good deals because sellers want the horse to go somewhere nice and I have a lovely yard at home with a super groom and horses have a very nice time and I am usually find I end up knowing someone who knows someone and good owner will often investigate whos coming to see their horse as much as buyers ask around about the horse.
