I am in agony and can't move my neck. I tipped my head back a tiny bit in the shower this morning and felt it ping straight away, my arm aches like mad and i'm going crazy! In a hot bath with paracetamol now.

What can I do? I had Physio on this shoulder after a nasty (double) fall about 10 years ago, could it be coming back to haunt me?!

Keep it warm until the morning, take ibuprofen for it's anti-imflammatory properties and then go to the emergency docs clinic in the morning for proper painkillers and to request physio ... that's what I would do anyway. xxx

Totally sympathise as I've had the same. If you can get one of those 8 hour heat pads they are amazing. If not a hot water bottle. Plus Ibuprofen (which you can double dose with paracetamol) will help take the swelling down. And as hard as it might sound try to relax the area as much as possible. There's nothing worse than anticipating a muscle spasm and tensing up as it makes it worse. Hope you feel better soon. Gentle hugs. xx

I get this a lot!!! And getting spasms at the mo, but trying to ignore it

Use an ice pack and then heat pad. I have to go to Docs and get strong painkillers as paracetamol and ibuprofen don't touch it.

Them off to chiropractor for me, that's the only way I can get better!!!!

Hope you feel better soon

heat & rest. Hot water bottle? and if you have any pain relief gel /anti inflamatory gel?they are better/faster acting than most oral painkillers..I've been on pretty much everything in recent years. Its not always good to have physio immediately/too soon, from experience, as it can be too painful..sometimes better to let it settle a bit first..so it doesn't aggravate it. Deep heat is good, but I've found the most awesome rub thats far better..Tiger balm/oriental balm..you can get red or white, work for a multitude of evils from trapped nerves, muscle damage, headaches, sinuses & period pains & pretty much natural too..hope you feel better soon & see dr as soon as you can too x

Even if Ibuprofen doesn't touch the pain still take it as it is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Take it every four hours, as per instructions and it is quite safe to take paracetamol at the same time.

Um, hate to go against the flow here, but when I injured my back my chiropractor said that the best thing was to ice-pack it rather than use heat. She explained that it goes against conventional "wisdom", but that heat was the worst thing to do!

Personally, I'd consult an osteopath or chiropractor ASAP and/or a private physio; if you ask your GP for physio you'll wait at least six weeks for your first session and then only be given your allocation "portion" after which you'll be just cast adrift.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. Having no ibruprofen in the house, only extra strong paracetamol, I have just suffered a night from hell, no sleep! Will see docs today, and call my horse Physio (she does humans too) and see what she says.

Yours wincingly...

Try and get hold of some diazepam, I get trapped nerves in my shoulder a lot, and this is the only thing that helps!

Also chiro's will advise ice, however I find with trapped nerves/muscle only heat makes me feel better.

The heavy wheat bags that you microwave are the best as they add a bit of weight to your shoulder and help it drop.

Also if you can manage it use a door frame, put your hands on door frame and then lean body through, sorry if that doesn't make sense! It will help to free you up a bit.

Good luck, it's a horrible thing so I sympathize

get yourself to a chirpractor!! ours charge £50 for the first appointment, and £28 for the follow ups. well worth it!

I did something similar to my neck/shoulder/rib in the summer, couldn't get a shirt on, and had to get OH to do up my bra! By the time I'd seen the chiro, I could move normally again, and by the following day it was pretty much back to normal.

I'm still going every 10 weeks at the moment, but that's because my rib keeps moving out and pressing on the nerve! :(

This! no point in taking anti inflammatories if you're putting heat on it! Ice is the way to go :)

Botters, those stretches are fab, thank you so much.

Jenhunt, I know i'm going to have to. I had Physio on it when I was a student (every week, free on the NHS...I felt like a flexible child!

Myjods and Brokebut- i'm edging towards the ice, but am not looking forward to it - heat is a far nicer concept! It does make sense though.

It has highlighted my appalling posture since having my daughter, and having worked at a desk for 8 hours solid for two days this week has obviously aggravated something.
