I have been made redundant today and I have Ted who costs 50 pound a week to keep...what do I do til I find another job!! arrrrggghhh am so stressed, not that long ago I was looking for a 2nd horse!! god!!! any of you lost your job or been unemployed and owned horses??
 
I was SEVERELY taken for a ride by someone I was working for, and they currently owe me £6000. I managed to keep two horses while I was making just £30 a week... PM me if you're interested in the whole grizzly story, but trust me, there is a way! I have one very poor doer, and we've all come out the other side happy, healthy and very grateful for the money I now have!
 
Oh dear, feel for you, I have the same threat hanging over me at the moment. Can you put your boy on DIY/grass livery until you get a new job, I've got 2 at the moment, one on grass (£10 per week) and one on DIY, essentially a field and stable for £25 per week. Could you also consider going barefoot for a little while? Sending lots of good luck vibes your way :)
 
Hi, don't despair, my oh last his job 18 months ago due to serious ill health and I shed so many tears I thought the world was going to end, BUT alas we have managed and I have still got my 2 horses, although they are on cheap DIY but they don't go without and neither do we, and no we are not scrounging benefits, we get nothing as I work and we have a bit of savings which we have scraped together over the last 15 years, so we are living off of my wages and our savings, and we are lucky that we only have a small mortgage although do have 2 expensive teenage sons - but good luck and chin up things will work out in the end - take care x
 
thanks all, Ted is at DIY Livery now costing 25 pound a week, he only has front shoes on..working livery not really an option as he is essentially a happy hacker due to a collateral ligament injury...thanks for goodluck vibes etc- sure we will be ok in time...x

would love to know how you managed that on 30 a week hun!! x:eek:

Hugs... sorry to hear that first dont do anything hasty have you other outgoings rent morgage etc , savings ?? can you find something that pays the bills, could you find a cheaper way of keeping him for now (grass livery turned out 24/7perhaps).. my income has redused in the last year or so and im having to be very carefull what I spend... good luck ...
 
I live with my parents (only 20) so dont have any mortgage or bills as such, dont have any savings either unfortunately, I just have my horse and little jeep to run!
 
Would really love to know how you did it, you must have worked wonders. I have to say I am in the fortunate position of having a good job, but shed loads of outgoings. Due to the fact that we have been locked into a vile legal dispute with a soon to ex business partner, I have gone from a very high income to earning not a huge amount, even though we have a company which is doing very well (I am prevented from discussing it further, sorry). As a result, my two horses are now on DIY, instead of full livery. OK,this is a temporary thing, but its painful and I am find it pretty hard, as I was earning the major wage in our household. Would love to know how you do it. PM if you have to.
 
Right, forget any sort of pride or embarrassment - ask any friends you know who have land, and if that fails, knock on doors! Ask if you can keep your horse on their land in exchange for helping them in some way (I looked after a very doddery old pony and did chicken duty for them). Take your horses shoes off, and if possible turn him away, if not (it wasn't possible with one of mine) keep him going by lunging and long reining round the field, and the odd hack on the roads if you need to. Buy a very very good quality balancer such as Blue Chip, and feed that - expensive at first, but lasts much longer and is much more effective than feeding it alongside nuts or mix etc. if you have a poor doer like mine! Offer up your services as a tack room fairy - I did this and charged £70 a day for cleaning and organising messy yards and tack rooms, was fantastic! Also, sell anything you don't need, every £2 is useful. Offer to do rubbish jobs like poo picking for people for maybe £10 a week. I taught in my spare time, and offered my services as a groom for children with non horsey parents at shows.

There is so much you can do, don't panic. It's easier and less scary than you think. xxx
