Took Oz to the vets tonight as the patch just wasn't healing. I think it would have healed better uncovered, but every time the bandage was off he worried it and it flared all over again. He is now on a course of Ab's and Steroids to stop the itch and give it chance to heal. I have to keep bandaging for another couple of days, then try him without the bandage, once the drugs have had a chance to stop the itch!!

Now all I need is for you all to keep your fingers crossed that he hasn't picked up KENNEL COUGH.

Whilst I was in the vets a complete tosser walked in with a Westie on a loose lead, which promptly ran up to Oz to lick his face, just before its half wit owner told the receptionist he thought it might have Kennel cough.

He was then told to take the dog back outside and wait to be called in, but I'm guessing the potential damage must already have been done.

So any one know anything about Kennel Cough? How long before symptoms (which I assume is coughing)? Nothing I can do about my other dogs, but wondering how contagious it is and whether I better not take them up the yard for a while......................

contagious....VERY!........signs 5-7 days usually, sometimes longer.........has he had it before?, if we bring a new rescue in, the older rescues/those who have had it b4, do not even cough anymore, my dogs don't when I have a bout in, they have built up a nice little immunity now

It does spread like wild fire, would maybe, jeep him from yard for next few weeks.

Hope the paw heals quickly now.

KC can take upto 2 weeks to show & there are at least 14strains of it & as Cala said it is very contagious.

Would it be possible for you to ring the vets explain what happened & ask if it was KC the dog had as you want to know how to deal with your dogs. As you do not want to take them out if a possibility they 'may'have it?

Good idea, but not sure they are going to want to give out that information, but worth asking anyway.

Looks like Oz and the girls are going to be confined to barracks as can't risk infecting the dogs up the yard (I would not be popular). Poor Oz is going to be climbing the walls in a couple of days though.

You can carry it on your clothes so watch that as well! Think it can live in the mucous for upto 24hrs. So overalls before leaving maybe an idea?

It's worth asking, you can say you do not what to know any personal details ie his name or anything just if it was KC.

I know my vets would help me out with that but does help that the Office manager is my best friend!!

Personally I am not a fan of the vac plus it only covers a few of the strains not all of them.

No worries there as have separate yard coat, boots and over trousers.....................not to mention about a hundred other layers as its so flipping cold.

I thought that was the case re: the vacs. The poor bloke next to me was only there for a KC vacs for his Lab and 14 week old JRT (as required by his dog walker), he was well chuffed I can tell you!!!

Oh well its worth asking (hopefully they will remember him) as its not like I know his name (for them to look him up), only the time he came in and that he had a Westie and is a complete brainless tosser!!!

I am sure from your description they will know exactly who you are on about!

The worst that can happen is that they wont tell you. If you do not ask you will not know!

Good luck fingers crossed!
