Anything by quad will be expensive, as it takes so much longer and they just can't take the same size of machinery as a tractor.

I have paid £60 per acre for spraying (weed killer) previously, which was someone with a quad. Tractor would have been cheaper, but our land was overrun with ragwort when we moved in and we didn't know any of the local farmers at that point so we needed someone in quickly. He did a great job and was worth every penny, anyway.

Works out at £25/acre to have my fields either topped or harrowed, whereas the chap who does the ragwort spraying also offers topping but charges £60/acre again, because it takes 3 times as long. There are others in our area who do it cheaper than £25/acre but the farmer who comes to us is really nice, does a good job and always takes time to advise me and chat about lang management/horses/life in general, that I think for a once-a-year cost, it's worth the extra £30 or whatever it would work out at.

It will depend in part, though, on where you are?

Just paid £60 per acre this morning for weedkiller by quad this morning. Worth every penny as he's a wealth of knowledge & always happy to advise on any land maintenance.

Harrowing the other field a couple of weeks ago was £100 for about 9acres with a tractor, but he ties it in with other fields locally. He also makes our hay for us.
