i was wondering if anyone uses pads for the hard ground and if anything really works. i have a footy tb who broke his foot 2 seasons ago so seems to be extra footy on hard ground. i have heard of some rubber stuff that you inject between shoe and foot......can't find it though! any ideas welcome.

equithane is the gel that is injected to fill the hoof. It's good stuff but expensive.
Your farrier will be able to tell you how much he charges (I pay £35 per foot)

Dont rate the equithane stuff.... lasted a fornight then ended up with bruised soles

I have a flat footed thin soled TB who also broke his pedal bones ( yes both) and I use horse-trax pads. ( you just need to google them)
they are about £18 inc VAt and postage and depending on the work load reuseable. Don't have any problems with thrush and have seen a marked improvement in his feet..... infact my horse is now so dependant on them he is " unsound" without them

Flippin heck how big ur horses feet?! Equithane is about £30 per pack and generally a pack will do a pair of size 5 feet. It is very effective but better if the farrie puts a 'mesh' under the shoe for the equithane to grip to.

LOL !! He's a 16.2hh tb (don't know his foot size) but takes about 3/4 a pack per foot. add onto that the mesh, nozzles and the blue squares used to keep the gel in until it sets, plus the added farrier time and it soon mounts up!

Although I have to say my farrier is clever and can manage to reuse the gel inserts for 2-3 shoeings.

SIDNEYFLATFOOT.... i have had my horse fitted with the horse trax pads this morning, but not sure timing was right as i'm at nurstead tomorrow, do they need much time to get used to them or should he be ok?????

He will be fine, my boy was used to them within 20 minutes...

My lad is on field rest without them at the moment, and not 100%, so i am looking forward to getting the pads put back on and the look of bliss on his face

My boy had this last year and 2005. Same as B&Js horse.
It worked well, but last year due to the heat contracted pussy foot after pussy foot.

He has (since ive had him - 4 years) worn leather pads and this helps stop bruising as he has seriously flat feet.

The gel was great but expensive and found if i did fast work he slipped badly without studs.

The reason we tried the gel was for his ringbone more than his shallow feet. The leather works just as well and far cheeper.
