The horse i share is a Dutch Warmblood who occasionally forgets his size and manners but is generally a sweet and willing horse. He is fit, sound and has a great variety of work to do and is content.

However, when i hack him out and it's warm, he snatches with his teeth/muzzle/snout at his knees/legs, whether we are walking/trotting/infront/behind/in company/alone. I tell him off and he has a tantrum over it all.

He wears brushing boots, front and back and has quite a thick crank noseband - it's possible these itch and he is rubbing for that reason. However, he doesn't do it with his owner.

Any suggestions????

Come on guys, 40 views and noone dares to respond!
Someone must have an idea!! You're all horsey people...

Is the horse being an ar3ehole or is the general consensus that he has itchy legs/head?

My horse (also DWB) does the same even in the school. Usually it is because he is getting a wet mouth and it is running down his lips. He does not like the dripping so hence runs his mouth on his legs.

Also rubs when wearing boots in hot weather - now do not bother.

When schooling he is allowed three rubs but then has to get on with it.

Mine does this too, from time to time, and he always gives his nose a good rub! Think it must get itchy, but I do wonder if he uses it as an excuse to get the reins for a bit. Agree with CAR, let him do it once to relieve any itch, then make him get on with it, tantrums or not!
