Painting a riding hat?

You're absolutely right about painting bike lids being a no no, I'd imagine riding hats are made of similar stuff, so I think it'd be a bad idea along with glues and stickers!

As an aside, I do like the phrase 'motorbike hats' and shall be aiming to use it more in general conversation :D

I don't think I would be putting paint on my hat if I had paid out for a GPA! ;)

Presumably the CO Pro II hats are painted (the pink / gold / silver ones) - so presumably it must be *possible*.

Whether I would do it myself, is a completely different matter!

Painting bike helmets can affect the protection it gives. Many bikers do wear airbrushed helmets though. Not sure if there is any evidence of its affect in an accident. However, I would draw the line at swarovski chrystals on them as advertised locally, surely they would go through the helmet and cause injury?

It's a big no-no. Almost all forms of paint can react with the construction of the hat/helmet and weaken it. My daughter wanted to 'decorate' her new bland motorcycle helmet, the man in the shop advised against it with some graphic illustrations. We ended up buying a sparkly pink helmet (actually cheaper than the original) choice.

Why is it a no no for bike hats? What does it do to them? Surely its just a bit of paint..

I believe the chemicals in the paint react badly with the composite that the helmet is made of, causing it to degrade. This causes structural weakness and the helmet will split if you whack your head.

You can get a pro to paint your lid but they have a good knowledge of what paints will react and what won't.

Glue has the same issues as paint so no swarovskis!
