Does anyone paint iodine onto their horses soles to harden them up? My farrier suggested I do this with my last slightly flat footed horse and I think my new one would benefit from it if it works, her feet are a little bit smelly too when I pick them out at the moment and as she lives out I wondered if it would be useful in preventing thrush? I am not too worried about that but just wondered....

She is shod all round by the way.

I know people take kelp as a hair and nail supplement so I guess it makes sense!

My farrier recommended iodine & surgical spirit painted onto my horses soles to harden them and it worked brilliantly - would recommend it

our vet recommended it to a flat footed horse that was prone to thrush, worked very well. we use to do it 3 times a day at the start then once a day when he was better.

Sugardine is good for thrush..

When Maje had sole excision for a seroma, I used a mix of eucalyptus oil and iodine to harden the new tissue and help disinfect the tissues..

So yes, I'd recommend giving it a go..

I've heard of quite a few people doing it with good results :) have heard some do it with purple spray, too.
As with many foot problems though, diet is an important factor to ensure good hoof growth and quality.

Yes, I have used it with great results. My old, flat footed, thin soled TB had his shoes off in July and I painted neat iodine on his soles every other day or so for a few weeks and now only use it about once a week.

Nobody believed he would ever be able to walk barefoot, but the iodine turned his soles rock hard (they used to give with thumb pressure!) He is absolutely fine now walking on any surface including concrete and hardcore.

Sorry to hijack, but those who use it - where do you get it from? My local tack shop has stopped selling it and purple spray doesn't seem to be as good

Countrywide Farmers (or that type of store). It's best to get it from the farming section rather than the horse section. Same goes for the purple spray - the stuff in the farming section is the real heavy duty stuff, unlike the horse variety which is much weaker.
