Painting kick boards

Hi,

Has anyone painted there kickboards to make them last longer? If so, what have you painted them with?

Someone told me to coat them in tar, but I have no idea where to get tar from, or if this is a good idea, any thoughts?

The kick boards in our stables are just painted black - I guess just with paint, doesn't look like anything special.
