Another colour question I’m afraid!
I’m working on a painting at the moment of a palomino and I want to be 100% sure that they can have a dorsal stripe before I paint one on.
I’m pretty sure they have them….?

According to this page https://equinehelper.com/palomino-horses-information/
"if a palomino has a dorsal stripe, then it’s not actually a palomino".
From another page:
"Countershading is not associated with any particular gene and can appear on any colour horse. It's not usually as clearly defined, however in rare cases it can appear just as defined as a true dorsal (in which case you'd have to determine if the horse carries dun through some other means, such as genetic testing)."

Maybe those pages are wrong, but I can't recall that e.g. @LadyGascoyne 's 2 palominos have dorsal stripes.

Can a palomino carry ND1? IIRC that can cause a false dorsal stripe that appears at certain times of the year?

My bay Arab has a dorsal stripe in summer sometimes he goes very light bay in summer.

I've read that Arabs doesn't carry the Dun genes?

Either way, this is an image I found online of a horse that's maybe a palomino, but definitely have countershading, not a real dorsal stripe

Also found this example of a bay with countershading

Yes, mine are a little darker but not so much that it could be called a dorsal stripe.

Mine are:

Chestnut tobiano (98% Arab) x cremello (70% Arab)

Light chestnut with flaxen mane and tail (pure Arab) x cremello (quarter horse)

Thats not a dorsalstripe, its counter shading. Any colour can have that. If a horse has ND1 then they can have what looks like a very convincing dorsal stripe, but isn't, just to confuse matters further.

Yes, that’s what I meant - my horses don’t have any stripe, just a slightly darker shading. And mine don’t have ND1, they are chestnut / cream.
