He could be a dunmino (Dun + Cream on a chestnut) or the darkening and appearance of the stripe could be a result of the greying process and his foal moult or a combination. Whatever his colour he will end up white probably turning grey as a yearling and progressing from there.

What breed and colour and shade are his parents and grandparents?

Ah if the parents are pure bred welsh then it shouldn't be dun, probably the "dun" thrown by the sire was actually a buckskin, so the dorsal stripe may be a red herring so to speak!

Ohhh so can pure bred welsh sect b not be dun? You can actually see the greyish colour stopping on all 4 legs and all lower legs are palomino colour but starting to darken so im assuming he will have 4 black legs as his dad was a light grey with black legs and mane and tail also black...hes a sweetie and im keeping him for breeding x

Welsh Ponies DO NOT carry the dun gene, unless they have been out-crossed with either highland or Shetland. The dam and sire must have produced a single dilute BUCKSKIN in the past not a dun.

WAS TOLD HE WAS SINGLE DILUTE GOING GREY THIS IS HIS RECENT PICS NOW HAS A CHOCOLATE FACE BUT HIS PALOMINO LEGS GOING DARK AND A FAINT DORSAL STRIPE APPEARING FIND IT AMAZING HOW A PALOMINO TURNS GREY THEN DUN COLORED THEN GREY AGAIN LOL

From the photos, your foal seems to have been born palomino, his mane and tail were far too light to have been a buckskin, the colour changes you are seeing are the result of the grey modifier. The dorsal stripe is probably either counter shading, or the grey modifier changing the coat as he moults out his baby fluff. One of the biggest indications that he is greying out is around his eyes, he has what they call the grey goggles, his eyelids are most definitely grey.

He is a very smart little chap, who will go through a whole range of colour changes as he matures.

I've never seen a true dun welsh only single cream, but there is a lot of grey in B's behind which any Dun could hide and since there is limited parentage testing it is not impossible that a rare dun could have crept in so to speak.

There is no dun in the New Forest either but at the sales last year there was a clear red dun listed as a purebred in the pens along with double dilute listed as a palomino! So I would be reluctant to say never! Unfortunately there is not yet a test for Dun itself, though they have isolated a linked gene that is inherited with Dun but part of that process involves visual attribution which would be problematic with grey and single cream as it is with Appaloosas!

He should go to grey next year, the fact that he is still showing palomino may indicate that he only has 1 grey gene, but you can test for that and it's the only sure way to tell before he starts breeding.

hi same foal is now a yearling and went almost black in winter but now is chocolate brown with gold and red all over him...is it possible for a palomino foal who went grey to turn palomino again?
