This is Fifi. She is a 2 year old reg Welsh Sec D. Would love to see pics of any other 2 year old Sec d's, especially palominos! Add your pics..

Well tbh I'm not 100% sure, looked it up and it seems paliminos are chestnuts with a creme gene - so has to have the gene in the breeding line. Mine is reg as chesnut roan - more confusion! so look at lines and she does have a palimino in there! Grand sire is langarth Llewelyn tho who is chesnut.

What line does yours have - beautiful by the way! Mine is not 2 - she's 6

Why is that? What defines a pally from chestnut with the flaxen mane?

A palomino is a chestnut horse + one copy of the cream gene (two copies would result in creamello).

A Flaxen chestnut is a chestnut horse with two copies of the flaxen gene (one copy doesn't lighten the mane/tail).

Pale Haflingers are Flaxen chestnuts with the Pangare gene. This is often mistaken for palomino, but it's very different genetically.

ETA. Polly, could you post a bigger photo of your chestnut? She doesn't look to have the roan gene to me, but is possibly a chestnut sabino.

Palominos don't have flaxen mane & tails, they are supposed to be white, with no more than 15% black hair in mane or tail. Their bodies are supposed to look like a newly minted gold coin. If I could only attach a pic of my Sec A Palominos, I would but still being told I can't attach anything:confused: I have added a pic of my pali to the album Red at 10 weeks. This is the only way I have of putting pics on here. Sadly, it's not one of his showing pics, as they must be in a different folder & not stored on Amazon Cloud

Hmm - mine has a peroxide white mane but would never have considered her to be close to palomino as her coat screams ginger lol.

Trying to load pics via the album feature .

My pally Sec D as a 2yo:

I sold her as a 4yo as she didn't make the height for me :(

Faracat she is registered as having roan points on her legs and under her belly??? and generally as a chesnut roan

She looks much darker in this pic as shes under a tree, she is quite bright coloured but more ginger than the op I would say.

That's very helpful thanks. :)

Basically, there is a difference between 'roaning' or white flecks in the coat and being a true roan with the Roan gene. Your lovely mare doesn't have the Roan gene, so it's incorrect to call her a chestnut/strawberry roan.

Here is a Flaxen chestnut roan

and here is a chestnut roan (without flaxen).

Can you see how the head and legs are still chestnut?

Flaxen does seem to give paler fur by the hooves, my own flaxen chestnut has the same thing (on his only leg without a sock) and he also has the paler 'wheel arches.'

Sorry to the OP for hijacking her thread. Here's a lovely Welsh pally (Wedderlie Mardi Gras - sadly not my pony) to make up for it. :)

Thanks - yes she does not have any of the colouring of the Roans shown - odd that she was registered as such.

What about the whiteness of her mane - quite a weird combo bright white mane and darkish chesnut coat

See now the op is likely much lighter than her in the flesh BUT op mane is creamier.

Some flaxen Haflingers have very white manes, so it does happen.

There are far more horses with their colour misidentified in their passports than many people realise. It's one of the reasons that good photos are very important if a horse does go missing. Imagine if your horse was missing and only a written description was issued, people would be looking out for the wrong coloured horse.

Yes I'm sure scared thought! Thanks for your input all, apols op beautiful youngster you have there - hopefully you'll get some more pally pics!

Sorry OP for using your thread to ask this but I bought a miniature last year that has her colour as a minimal chestnut pinto on her passport but is obviously palamino so how do I go about getting this altered?

You need to talk to the PIO (it should have the contact details on the passport). They might want your vet to confirm to them that the colour has been entered wrongly and what the correct colour is.

Thanks so much everyone, fascinating re the colour question! Fi Fi's breeding is as follows: Sire: Cynheidrefawr Creme de la creme and Dam is Heulwereed Haf. Looking at the breed lines i can see Derwen and Nebo but I know nothing about Sec D's or their breeding! She is recorded as a Palomino, all I know is she is a real beauty! I am thinking of selling her actually as I must downsize my little herd!

sorry pollyP99, I have listed her breeding above, meant to quote you and forgot! How rude of me! Your girl looks lush btw. How big was she at 2 compared to her adult height? My girl is standing at 14.2hh atm, i'm guessing she will end up around 15hh?

Mine is a D x C (wish she was a pure D then she would be bigger and therefore perfect lol). She is called Ffion and I have had her nearly a year. Bought her unseen from Wales on a whim as she looked and sounded like my childhood dream pony and she is. After being totally off horses for ten years she got me hooked again and now we have four (between my daughter and I). :o:D

Ffionwinnie, what lush pics, how sweet is the little one on her little pony! Two gorgeous ponies! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks :). When I bought Ffion I told myself I'd bring her on for my daughter and I could lead my daughter out hacking as well. Just this last month or so we have started doing so :)

Thankyou I will contact them.

For a horse to be registered palomino you might have to get it gene tested to see if it really is a palomino, or just looks like one. Palomino is a particular gene type, not just the gold colour and light mane, which can occur in chestnuts too.

Here is my palomino :)

Related to mine then - mine is a Cynheidrefawr baby too :)
