Does anyone have any preferences for the treatment of encysted small red? If you use Pan Guard do you keep them in for 5 days? I have a retired oldie who would only be able to walk in hand over the five days (time consuming at this time of year) so Equest seems the sensible choice. Then he can be turned back out sooner. Does this seem sensible to you? YO dishes out Pan Guard, you see.......

Spoke to my vet about this yesterday. She doesnt rate pan guard at all but highly recommends the new Pramox wormer. I have always believed PG was the most gentle of wormers.

panacur is pretty darn rubbish. the only time i use it is in a new horse with an unknown worming history or in an older horse who has had previous worm problems. in both cases i would then follow it up with Equest because Panacur is just so inefficient. Resistance is widespread to it.

Ditto, waste of money really. I would use Equest or Equest Pramox.

Equest is a good wormer...but not necessarily for all horses. One on our yard had an allergic reaction & we had to have the vet out pronto. Horse was seriously ill from it. This is the only one I've heard of having a reaction though.

I'd go for the Equest range, in fact I've used both Equest & Guard. Equest Pramox does everything but I suppose P. Guard is good for a horse that is a nitemare to syringe as it goes in feed...other than that I'd go for Equest & Equest Pramox.

my horse had the equest paramox wormer for the first time 6 weeks ago and took a nasty reaction to it and got colic and was generally unwell for a week, off her food for 5 days. vets advised me not to use it again. I know they advertise it as killing almost everything but i didn't think that meant the horse too!!!!!

Funny you should say that about Pramox. Talking to my vet about it this week - she says its the best and will get rid of everything including ensisted (sp), however, she has had a run of colics lately with this particular wormer and believes its due to the amount of worms coming out!

I used Pramox for the first time recently on 40 horses ranging from yearlings to 36 year old and had no after problems at all. They have been regularly wormed though with Equest if that makes any difference and we do have a strict worming programme on the yard.

Ah, yes. Vet did mention it was important that they had been done with equest prior to pramox.

[/ QUOTE ]

why? pramox is just equest and equitape. it's not any stronger than equest by itself - it just has equitape added to deal with tapeworms.

Dunno Star. Just listened to vet. Pramox is very new to the market and I havnt used it yet. I have a few rescue cases where history is unknown, and on vets advise I would possibly be wary of worming with this first. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

yep, completely agree with that - would probably go for Panacur first to break them in gently, but after that dont think there is any difference between going for Equest or the Pramox.

If your meant to worm first with normal equest then with the pramox then it should say so on the instructions. My horse has always been wormed properly, i've owned her since yearling and known her since birth and she's 13 now. Its sold as being so brilliant cause it will kill all the worms so surely it should just be used as the recomend as part of your worming program and not in addition to it. it is possible that if my horse has had a lot of worms that it was them coming out that made her ill in which case i'd of thought a warning on the packaging might be an idea!!! My vet didn't know what had made her ill apart from it being something to do with the wormer and has advised me not to use it again. I will say that i wormed my 23 year old pony at the same time and she was absolutly fine.
