I'm devastated this week I lost my 9.5yr old choc lab from pancreatitis, he was at the vets for 3 days on drips/pain relief etc but faded fast and showed no improvement on the vets advice he was PTS. It seemed to come on after he gorged on an old cooked turkey carcass discarded by the farmer next door, typical lab he was a glutton for old carcasses and had consumed lots of bits over the years without any side effects. My vet seemed to think it had something to do with a high fat intake. I'm beside myself because he only went missing for a few minutes and wouldn't come back straightaway when called :(

Hi

Please do not feel bad about this. Turkey is not particularly fatty and pancreatitis can be brought on at any time and by any food if there is a disposition to it.

I have had pancreatitis since I was 4 and believe me it is the most horrible disease to live with. I would not let any of my dogs live with it . Your dog unfortunately passed away and it is very sad, but it is better than having to face months or years of pain and sickness that your dog does not understand and having to make the Pts decision.

I am so sorry about your dog. I hope you understand my different point of view.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. My Springer had pancreatitis about eighteen months ago but thankfully bounced back and is still bouncing. Brings it home that what she was suffering from could so easily have been fatal. Once again, so sorry....

So sorry to hear about your lab. My friend's 12 year old Border Terrier died of this. He was diagnosed in June and died in September (unfortunately when staying with me !). She blamed herself for giving him a chicken casserole which had onions in it, the vets prolonged his life with drugs but to be honest it would have been much kinder to have pts early on instead of which he had a miserable last few months. The vets kept suggesting different treatments and of course she was desperate for him to recover so went with them. Not only did he have a sorry few months but the vets bills came to over £6,000. I know it's no consolation but at least your boy didn't suffer for very long. RIP chocolate boy.
