Morning fellow HHO's,

What a day I had yesterday. OH's parents own to elderly (but active) JR's and one went downhill on Wednesday with suspected Pancreatitis.
Vets confirmed yesterday with bloods that indeed it was and the decision of the family was to pts! (One of the factors being cost as said dog is not insured..)
The dreaded hour came and we were all so unsure that we were doing the right thing.. Our appointment came and we asked is it likely he could recover and have quality of life and vet was positive! Most dogs recover etc.. At this point it has to be mentioned that the dog had perked up, hadn't been sick today and stopped shaking.. all without treatment. Do they know?
And so the decision was made to drop what we were about to do and put him in for full treatment. I only pray that we have done the right thing by him. (dog is 14) The whole family is going to club in with cost.

So the essay leads me to my real question.. presuming diet is the issue here - dog is overweight and fed Bakers **head desk** what food would be most appropriate? Low in fat, high in fibre etc..? Mine is fed raw, but I don't think in this circumstance that it would be the best idea for him/them. I intend to buy the food for him to help them out as I know it's likely to be £20-£40 a bag!

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.. I am off at lunch time to visit him at the vets. Fingers x'd!!

My mum's JRT has chronic pancreatitis. She either eats Hills I/D (not brilliant quality-wise but does keep her weight looking ok and tummy sorted) or boiled white rice with boiled chicken or fish.
Chappie wet food is often cited as being a good, plain food but even this is too high in fat for my mum's dog - you really need it to be as plain as possible especially if he's acute. I think I'd just boil up some rice and chicken for the next few days until he's back to normal behaviour-wise, then look for the most suitable commercial food. Also just to mention something that is solely based on our experiences - excessive exercise has been a trigger for our dog as well as diet.

On a positive note,my mum's dog's pancreatitis is about as severe as it gets, she's had it for years and has been hospitalised on several occasions. However, she hasn't had an episode in about 2 years now and other than her weird diet it doesn't affect her at all now that we know what causes the problems and how to avoid them.

He looks like a real sweetie, I hope he's back to normal soon.

Tinned ( not dry) Chappie is what my girlie went on after her episode of Pancreatitis. It's really easy on their tummies and will give you time to look into alternative feeds. I have yet to find a good low fat dried food, my girl is not on Nutriment Low Purine minced raw.

Just been to vet with dog diagnosed with pancreatitis. He has been on Hills I/D and white fish and chicken and potato. Still has had
episodes, he has chronic not acute/ Vet has just given me some pills for him to be on to stabilise him, (painkillers/anti inflam) and Zitac anacid
Bloods showed a count of something or other to be 800, should be 200 ish ! Needs careful management. Am now trying to claim on my insurance, not holding my breath

Would like to thank you for your fabulous and prompt replies. Sadly the decision was made for him to be pts after showing no improvement :-( we are so devastated as its such a sudden thing and he appeared normal this time last week. Their other JRT does seem a little lost but at the time we could not bring ourselves to show him his best buds body :( I hope he will settle and move on soon.

I'm very sorry to hear this LBF :( I also lost my fabulous JRT last November to this but she was also battling lung and bladder cancer and the pancreatitis was 1 hurdle too many :(

So sorry...... my other dog was with us so understood what was happening and I'm sure your other one knew he wasn't well and will be okay in time.
