I'm just reviewing our worming programme at the yard as one of the mares is now in foal. We are safe with the wormers selected until we reached November.

Originally we were going to use Equest Pramox, but that is not suitable for pregnant mares. There is always Equest, but we were using that for the next lot of worming (which would have originally worked out to next worm in February for bots). However, we're conscious not to use the same group of wormer repeatedly trying to avoid a build up of resistance as per the advice of our vet who recommends using the more milder wormers on the market as and where we can.

The only other alternative that covers the November treatment for worms is Pancur 5 day Guard, which is safe for pregnant mares. For love nor money, can I heckers like find the period this wormer covers. I would assume the period covered will tie in with the final day of the wormer being adminstered.

I have a feeling it only covers 6 weeks - possibly up to 8 weeks, but I am not 100%. Does anyone know? Thanks in advance. xx

Fenbendazole (the active ingredient in Panacur Guard) lasts between 6 - 8 weeks interval, so I would assume you would need to re-worm at that interval following a 5 day course of Panacur Guard.

Panacur Guard is recommended to be used every 6 months simply to erradicate the worms it treats, not that it lasts 6 months in its effectiveness. You still need to maintain the appropriate intervals dependent upon the wormer you are using between the 6 month Panacur Guard courses (if you are going to use it regularly).

Hope that helps! :)

Not sure of the answer, I'd recommend contacting one of the wormer suppliers such as wormers direct (.co.uk & .com ) or Westgate labs. I've found them really helpful in the past

Thanks Spyda, yeah that does help me thanks. That was my way of thinking about the period it covers too - my only issue is I cannot find it in writing. I have searched the internet, looking on dozens of sites, and it does not officially state how long as a wormer it lasts.

Now I need to have a re-jig some dates and wormers for next year. Domino effect!

Thank you attheponies for your response. I really rate wormers direct too. They have so much helpful information on there that I regularly refer to, and have based our worming programmes around. :)

As mentioned, up to 8 weeks. I personally wouldn't worm again before 8 weeks were up. I'd be tempted for worm counts with a decent wormer for everything 'invisible' on the count.

Thanks for your input and the suggestion cinnamontoast, that is a good idea. We have 30 horses on the yard, divided up in herds of up to 8 horses per herd on average. This year we have had several new ones come in, and also, one mare went to stud, and my coloured went to a breakers yard. So, we have had some too-ing and fro-ing. xx
