Panic attack? Washing machine?

Hi all

I have an 11 year old border collie x, he has started to have a what I can only describe as a panic attack, heavy panting and needs to be real close to me in a distressed way

I have noticed he only has these when I have the washing machine on

He has never been scared of it before and do not know why this has suddenly started, anyone else had anything like this before?

Sometimes when our washing machine goes into the spin cycle it 'jolts' into it and makes a 'thumping' sound which has made our dog jump before...He has got used to it but every time it is about to spin he shuffles in his bed or gets up and walks out. Best thing to do is maybe give an escape route to the garden if practicable, and watch your dog throughout the whole wash cycle to see at what point it is frightening. Failing that do your washing when you go out with the dog (not always ideal!)

My terrier x has the same response to the dishwasher. The dishwasher is really quiet but she goes into a complete panic attack shaking and panting. I tried all sorts of things to get her to accept if but in the end I just allowed her to get outside into her kennel until it finishes.
She is a rescue dog and I've had her 7 years so I don't know if she had a bad experience with one before I got her but it's funny that she does not react the same way with the washing machine or anything else!

Thank you both, think for the time being I will leave if off when Barney is around and then listen to see if it is making a new noise of some sort, just seems strange that this has just started out of the blue

He has been fine tonight, no washing for me
