Pony fine at 5, by 7.30 eye up like a balloon and pouring tears. Immediately rang the vet, bathed eye meanwhile and pony emitting yellow gunk but happy to keep eye open. Watering subsides and fly bites noticeable beneath eye so figure scratching has led to puffiness and pony tends to over-react to bites by swelling up anyway.

Vet duly arrives and stains pony's eye to reveal no uptake of the dye so no corneal breach - phew - BUT during the exam notices something else within the pony's eye like a small white line............

He just gave him finadyne to make him comfy. Eye swelling had reduced by time vet arrived and watering completely stopped.
He was happy with the eye re today's incident but wants it checking further, tomorrow.

WHAT DID HE SEE?????

I am beside myself with worry. He's 8 and had no eye problems in the three years I have owned him and his eyes passed vet exam at purchase. I called the vet 999 style and still there's a problem

White on the cornea is damage to it, not necessarily an ulcer coz the damage can start from inside the eye. Did you mean vet saw white inside the actual eyeball? Did they say anything about uveitis? Is ned unhappy in bright light and standing at the back of the stable? Don't panic yet brighteyes. It could just be a fly bite. Please, please let us know how the eye is Weds coz, as you can see from my sig, I have first hand experience of serious eye problems. For now, the only thing I would stress yet again (sorry - paranoid) is take the utmost care how you put ointment, creams or drops into the eye of any horse. It's hard enough with a wriggling child or a kitten but with a horse, one jerk from him as you hold the pointy end of the ointment a millimetre away from the surface of his eyeball and you can severely damage the cornea or even stab/puncture the eyeball itself. With thick creams, it's far far better to put the cream on the clean end of your finger and squish your finger in the eye. With watery drops, you might have to be more inventive but I'd sooner waste a load of it by soaking a small piece of lint in the drops (NOT cotton wool as it is made up of tiny strands of cotton that can further irritate the eye) then holding the bottom eyelid out and squeezing the wet lint into the whole eye. Wet lint can't puncture an eyeball, even though it will drip up your arm! Sunny finally lost our epic battle to save his eye when yard staff stabbed him in his already damaged eye with the end of the tube. The vets showed me the cornea surface under the opthalmoscope and there was this massive, deep zig zag that went right across the whole cornea. It was dreadful.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow and please let us know how ponio is xxx
