My darling old horse who’s retired has been having a tough time.
His allergies worsened significantly and although we got the itching all but under control his coughing got worse. Ventipulmin didn’t work so he had to have steroids. These have helped significantly but I had to stop his daily bute temporarily whilst he was on them.
The past few days his arthritis worsened quite a lot.
I spoke to his vet today and we decided to stop the steroids for now and get the pain under control hoping now the cough is gone we can keep on top of his allergies and give pain relief.
I’ve (luckily) just been out to the field to top up water and put a rug on him (figure as he’s rough I can Molly coddle him, rain is forecast)
Anyhow, he followed me round a bit then rolled. I was pleased to see him roll until I realised he was in bit of a ditch in our sloping field, legs pointing uphill. He was totally stuck, after a few minutes he gave up and just lay breathing heavily.
I couldn’t turn him so called for help and sat with him, OH and I were able, fairly easily to turn him back over at which point he was able to get up himself. A bit stiff and shakey but seems fine.
Literally scared the cra* out of me. I’m now terrified he will do it again with no one around
I’m 99% certain it was purely bad luck where he rolled but then I’m also sure any other horse could have got up in that situ.
The vets coming Monday anyway if he’s not significantly more mobile
Poor little solider
