Hi,
My 8 month red setter keeps suffering bouts of growing pains, causing her sleep a lot more than normal, reluctance to go on walks, and particularly on this occasion a loss of appetite.
Anyone had dogs with this and have any tips on managing it and foods that i can offer to get her to eat (already providing scrambled eggs and chicken).

TIA

I would say the vets don't know what's going on and have guessed at that one (sceptical me? never), maybe she is just going through growth spurts? It can be tiring all that growing.
To be honest I would just treat her as normal, allow her to dictate when she needs to rest and maybe just reduce her exercise a bit.

My middle lab had paneo, I think the lameness changing legs is the main indicator. We stopped all exercise for a bit, as if those plates are under extra pressure it seemed best to rest them. We did mind games like find the biscuit and so on.
It didn't suppress the appetite in mine but possibly setters are less greedy? If she used to eat and now doesn't I would probably ask for blood and urine tests to rule out any underlying bug?
I wouldn't start offering tempting food, you will make a rod for your own back for life, just find her a nice quality food (maybe wet if she is fussy, rather than kibble), put it down at feeding times and pick it up again after ten minutes. Try again in an hour.

A friends dog had Pano. He is oversized which didn't help. Grew out of it eventually. He was GSD. Another acquaintance with a Malinois, which was normal sized, again, outgrew it with no ill effects, think it was just a waiting game for both.

Tawny has been absolutely fine since, to agree with you. She was the last dog I have ever fed puppy food to.

Interesting comments about the puppy food, as she has a mixture of dry and wet puppy food, both a high quality brand. This is her 3rd episode now, and although I know it's temporary it's unpleasant to see her in discomfort, so this may be a good next step.

Thanks for the help :)

I’d swap her to an adult food as it’s thought a high protein diet can exacerbate the problem.
As others have said the condition will eventually resolve on its own but it can be very painful. NSAIDS are often prescribed and I’d restrict exercise and avoid strenuous exercise when she’s having a flare up.

The food can definitely be the problem. Pups don't need high protein. They the same protein as an adult dog. Feeding raw will help.....I've never had growing pains on raw. Or just give her an adult, good quality, kibble. Raw food is about 15/16% protein, and that is ideal for a growing dog.....good percentage, but super quality. I would give Arnica and HYpericum homeopathic nosodes for pain. I hate NSAIDS.
