paper bedding, reviews?

I currently have hunters and megaspread down but i think it could be too dusty.

Has anyone used paper? he is a really wet horse so i go through a lot of bedding over winter.

Have tried bedmax and really like it but i need 5 bales a week as his stable is about 12 by 24 so its very expensive as it does seem to shrink after a day or two.

Pellets/ straw are a no no.
 
I used paper for quite a whole with a RAO horse and found that when I changed to Bedmax shavings she improved but I know your pain about the price of Bedmax, unfortunately I haven't found any as dust free as them. Paper is also heavy to muck out with a wet horse and blows everywhere on the yard unless you are very, very careful.... then it only blows a bit! Also it can be harder to get people to take the muck as as far as I've found it's not very desirable.

Have you tried Equibed or Bluefrog? these also claim to be dust free?
 
It is the worst thing ever and a total pain to muck out, I generally hate it though I have used free paper mixed in with other stuff.

Chopped cardboard squares much better and what I would use for a RAO horse.
 
No help re paper bedding but my stables are about 12' wide by 18' deep and I have rubber mats in the front half and a bed in the back half. This would help you cut down on bedding.
 
Awful, found my Horse coughed worse on it and it blew everywhere and I was forever sweeping!

Stick with shavings :)
 
Very heavy to muck out. Worked for my friends elderly Shetland who was very wet but horrible when I used it for my horse.

She bedded her other horse a big cob on a mix of Bedmax and paper and that worked quite well. Absorbent but not too heavy. He was quite tidy though.

I use to make his stable up like that but he wouldn't lay down, he then got sleep deprived and would fall down in his stable :( He will only lay on a fully bedded stable
 
Could you use Wood pellets as a base and then top with loads of shavings? then when mucking out, push the shavings off to one side and then just dig the wet patches out in the wood pellet bedding?
 
I used it a while back and really liked it. It is messy in that it blows everywhere, but it made a lovely bed and was totally dust free.

I tried this combination last winter, it was great for his wetness but there is something about the pellets i truly believe kicked off all of his respiratory issues. I don't know if it is the fact they are damp but as soon as i started using them it all just went downhill, which was such a shame as i thought they were great.
 
The main issues I have with it is 1) it moves around very freely, so you do really need a lot of depth if you want something lying down that is tricky.
2) when wet from poo/urine it clumps together and whatever tool I used I always seemed to end up taking out a lot more bed than I really wanted to.
3) because of 1 it moves about a lot when they walk about, which makes even more of it dirty.

Reading through the comments I wonder if there are different sorts of paper?
I’d agree with the above, completely dust free. I actually like it to muck out, once you get used to it it’s very easy as all the wet stays in a clump.
It would definitely be my bedding of choice but sadly I’m not allowed to use it :(
 
I loved paper bedding easy quick and light to muckout and very dust free however it’s awful dispose of the wind blows it off the muckheap and it looked awful when it got in the garden .
I swopped to bedmax .
Why don’t you bed less of the stable .
 
I used chopped newspapers for a while from Kelstone Recycling, £4 a bale and blinkin stuff was absolutely marvellous for one of mine with respiratory issues, totally dust free, made a lovely soft deep bed, super simple to muck out, no smell and mine didn't blow anywhere but I don't know anywhere else that does or did do recycled newspapers, everywhere else I've seen is normal paper or cardboard. Shame as I would have had all of mine on it if they were still about as I really did rate it, lovely and warm in the winter as well :-)
