Does anyone use paper bedding?

I am thinking about changing over from shavings as they are just so dusty despite buying supposedly dust extracted Hunters.

I have super soft Equimats so it would be on top of that but I do still like my bed to be very thick so wasn't sure how good paper would be in this respect?

Also, can anyone recommend a good supplier and give me an idea of cost? I currently pay £7.35 per bale for the Hunters and use 3 bales a week.

Hi there - yeah I use eco-bedding which is cardboard cut into about 1cm squares. However, this seems to work better deep littered, but it is really absorbent amd the amonia smell doesn't seem to be there and the horses seem really happy in it. Think shavings would work better on top of equimats unless you could source a really find shredded paper!

I've recently changed from Ecobed (cardboard squares) onto paper and I love it. Its £4 for a 20Kg sack, whereas the Ecobed was £5.60.

I found that Ecobed and paper is not suitable to deep littering but it is so easy to muck out you simply don't need to anyway. It is so absorbant that it keeps the wet to a patch so you just pick it up on one shovel!

i have mine on paper and love it.

so easy to muck out - i buy it for £4 a bale.
i have rubber mats and i find 1/2 a bale lays a nice bed on it.

the whole yard is on it and the only problem with it is how well it flies away in the wind!!!

One of mine is on shredded paper, i really like it. Works best when done as a deep litter bed and all we do is use our old newspapers, rip it in to strips. Also the scrap paper from home we put that through a shredder just in case its got important info on it.

We find the only down side to it is it can be time consuming ripping up the paper but if you are going to buy it in then you'll have no problem, and it will blow around abit if it gets out on to the yard.
