I currently use shavings (Bed down Pure) I used about 4 a month so not bad at all (I'm lucky shes clean)

I was just upstaires shredding (office work) and the other Horsey girl here asked me to save the bags (we do about 2 sackfuls a day) to use as bedding. I have never even thought of this, although I know they sell it in shops. It would save me some money and time to get them (the other side of town and I have small car so a pain in the bum)

so my questions are:

How absorbant is it?
How dusty is it? (mine has slight COPD)
Pros and Cons?

Thanks.

I did for a while very absordant and dust free easy to look after but my horses are a home and it bad for blowing of the muck heap and looked awful in the garden so I stopped.

i found the stuff i bought in shops absorbant but the extras i would get would people were more like bed top ups and a bit useless at soaking up the wet. its completely dust free. i loved using it.

cons are that it sticks to everything!! buckets, yard, horse, stable floor. and to be honest with a clean horse i dont think you would be saving that much money. the bags of paper i used to get were £5 each but they are smaller than shavings bags.

Thanks for your reply :)

I have just texted my yard owner to ask if its ok first before putting them down. My boss said I can have as many as I want for free. Our shredder is very good and the paper is tiny. Will take a photo and upload.

Dust free and rots quicker than shavings IMHO. I use about half a bin bag a week and mix it with a bale of shavings a week.

I did find it was a bit flyaway so I used it under shavings and in the banks and its a great free way of bulking out the bed :)

Ok so got about 10 of these in the warehouse

This is how fine the paper is

We use shredded money for ours, a lot cheaper than shavings and is very absorbant. Easy to muck out, completely dust free and has pretty glittery silver bits in too :D

Only downside its a nightmare to sweep off the yard if the ground is wet, but we can live with that as it saves us money :)

Not really the same as what you're looking to use but its still a form of paper!

Stupid question, but were do you get the money? :o

Well I wish I had enough money that I could use it for bedding :D

The supplier we get it off (I think!) gets all the old bank notes that go out of production....if that makes sense? And they're all shredded in to tiny bits. Its completely white the bedding so all the die is taken out, but they do leave the silver glittery bits in which I love :p

I've used office shredding for years and much prefer it to other types of bedding not just because it's free - it's easy to handle, absorbant and rots down quickly. The finer cross-cut is the best and hardly makes any mess at all. I wouldn't use the wider long shred -it winds itself round my tools and gets on my nerves. Narrow long shred is just about acceptable.

We have it as my mum is allergic to horses, despite riding all her life! We get it from a couple who shred their own, nice and cheap. Very easy to muck out we've had no problems. Also used free office stuff when it's been offered, looks just like your bags, and also that is fine. I would add that it's newspaper that's shredded so is more absorbent that normal paper (which is what you tend to get for free) but it's still great to mix in with shavings or a paper bed :)

I use the long shredded stuf and I find it easy to muck out and not that different from straw.

Not dusty at all which is good for my oldie and my greedy cob can't eat it. That's why I changed as she was eating straw and shavings :(

I find it rots quicker, even more so the wetter it gets, so living in scotland will be perfect lol :)
