Was reading an American horse forum yesterday and came across a post that apparently feeding 1-2 tablespoons of Paprika a day will help enhance the colour of the coat and make it darker and more golden! Just wondered if anyone over here had actually tried it and if it worked? There were people who had also used a product called Gold as Sun for the same reason but its fairly pricey. No objection to my Fabio being a bit paler but if it would work then i may be tempted to try it in the spring! :)

Keeping them covered from head to toe to avoid sun bleaching works too.

I knew a lady who bred and showed palominos very successfuly (still does) and she was always muttering about having to go and bring the girls in out of the sun.

I don't use anything, my palominos never seem to be the same colour two years running, in fact they change colour weekly :( Zeus has been much lighter this year than he was last year.

Thats interesting Enfys as Fabio has been much lighter this year than normal. He's only just gone his nice dark colour and now he's starting to shed it so will have his light winter coat before i know it!

Molasses makes them darker, we rug ours to make it consistent if we are showing as it can make them paler. Not heard of paprika, hmm interesting.........

Have tried this with my friesian - got 3 large pots of mild paprika from macro and fed about tbls a day.
I shared with another horse and it made no difference at all!
Will just love my brown friesian as he is! :)

I feed a tablespoon daily to my horses - I will know soon if it has had an effect on their coats as they are changing to summer coats at the moment. I'm also feeding Freshly ground Linseed and Sunflower seeds. Serenity is developing dapples which I love.

The only thing I have found is it is very expensive around $79 a kilo. It is also swabbalble so don't feed to a horse that is competing. I don't know what the withholding period is either.

Interesting, I have a pale palomino and he gets mistaken for a grey in winter when he is clipped... so maybe he will have to start having spicy dinners :)

Fabio does too Sleepy, this is him in summer compared to winter when clipped!!! Would love for him to keep his summer colour all year!

Thought i'd do an interim update for those that were interested. I started feeding Fabio linseed and BOSS in September, then added paprika each day from January before he started changing coat. The linseed and BOSS gave him the best winter coat he's ever had! Will be continuing with that for sure! He's now in that scruffy inbetween stage of getting his summer coat but as his winter coat is nearly white, it looks awful! Should even out in the next couple of weeks though! But - the summer coat that is coming through does appear to be very prange!

This pic is his summer coat last year before he was clipped in September:

Then winter coat in December (3rd clip!)

And now awkward stage!

Will update again when his summer coats through properly.
