Hi thereWonder if you can help, in feb of this year my rescue youngster (2 years old) suffered at the hand of migrating encysted red worm, in the middle of a horrible spell of weather he deteriorated in the space of three days to pure skin and bone and barely able to stand. He was given 5 days to live, part of the lack of condition lead also to paraphimosis meaning his willy was so swollen it wouldn't retract back into his sheath (I'll add now, he is a colt still now so is ungelded) during the intensive treatment he received steroid tablets and injections, antibiotics, and all manner of other things, we bandaged, used steroid cream and strapped up his willy and after about 6 weeks managed to get the swelling down to the point where it could be rolled back into his sheath again, of course it only stayed there until he went for a pee and then would hang loose again, here we are now three months on, and he is back to bouncing health, he looks better than he ever has! However his penis still does not retract, ever...we have never seen him retract it since the swelling started, it's not swelling up again, but there is a huge amount of excess skin which seems not to be reducing in size, and it now hangs down maybe 8 inches from his sheath. The vet has said there's nothing more that can be done and he will just stay like that, however he is a cremello, and I'm seriously concerned about the prospect of it just being left like that with flies and mozzies and all manner of other things which could happen too it, it seems to be waiting for trouble, we move to Portugal in August and I want to ensure something is done, has anyone ever seen this paralysis? Did the horse cope ok? What did you do about it? The only other thing I've seen is an op in which the penis is effectively chopped off which apparently is 'no big deal' but sounds horrific! Am. Being crazy for wondering why there is nothing else that can be done?
