Hi

Just wondered if anyone on here is or knows of a paramedic? As I am interested in becoming one and wondered what the hours were like?
I read somewhere they work 12hr shifts, and wondered how many of these shifts do they do a week?
Thanks x

My OH's brother is a paramedic and yeah it can be 12 hour shifts... i think he gets 3 days off a week, but he actually does overtime on those days, and with the normal shifts they are spread out over 7 days a week!

Where you from Horsey-mad??
The usual is 12hrs, and it's really hard work, can be very stressful especially when dealing with the incidents involving children!
Otherwise it's a really rewarding job....so long as you can take abuse on the chin, and not be offended!
Depends on which trust your looking at joining, the shift pattern varies immensly, up here some do 2on 2off, others a selection over a 12 week pattern.
If your not already in....then you'll join us all as a emt or technician first, it's worth doing a stint at that level before considering your options.... sometimes it's not worth the extra bit of pay for the amount of work/responsibility...like the drug side etc etc
Good luck....

My sister is an ambulance technician and is training to be a paramedic. She left school with not one qualifiction and was told by her teachers to remember to ask if they want fries wth that!
She loves it!! YES she works some long shifts, she has done 24hrs-12 at work then 12 'on call'. But she says she wouldnt change it for the world. She does say it has bad parts too. I posted on here last week on how she was attacked at a call trying to help someone!
Go for it and good luck
