Hi. Obviously I can make a vet appointment, but very busy between bank holidays and I can't quite explain the problem.... Am I being paranoid? I tend to trust my gut instinct with my animals though.....

My gsd is 5 years old and other than sensitive skin (can't have gluten and it quite itchy) he is a happy healthy dog. But the last few weeks he has whined/winced jumping out of the boot, but I could not find anything on his paws. At the farm he is sometimes refusing to even get out of the boot- but normally he flies in and out at the farm. He is not limping.

Another strange thing- his coat seems to have changed. He has an extra big moult around November and then normally gets a thick covering over his back, but this has not happened. He now has a very light coat and it is a bit dull even when brushed.

He always eats well. I have not ft big enough scales, but he does look like he has lost a bit of weight (although this may in part be the coat being thinner). But I have not reduced food. This morning I came downstairs and he had been sick all over his bed (this would of been many hours after his dinner at 6pm when we were in bed). He seems a but lathargic, just not himself.

Not really sure what the vet will do? Presume examin and maybe a blood test? I presume with all these factors it is more than me being paranoid and worth a vet trip.

I would get him in-reluctance to do things that are normal for him indicates a problem-the other things may or may not be related. They should be able to run a blood test within 30 mins that will give an indication of anything untoward.

Yes would definitely get him checked out. Mine was poorly almost this time last year and was squeaking when getting in and out of car...he actually had a lot of gas due to a bug and the impact of jumping up and down was sore on his tummy.

Vets at 9.10 am tomorrow. Hopefully they can get to the bottom of it. Oh has just got in and he didn't get up to say hi and is now putting running trainers on- normally he would now be pacing encase he is going to take him running- instead he is sleeping on sofa. Hopefully it is nothing serious

Sounds very like mine last year, just wanted to lie down all the time. He had a short course of tablets and was fine after. You could also take a urine sample to rule out a UTI.

Re the coat change...the weather has been odd this winter so it may have thrown it a little.

Glad you've got him booked in, I was about to reply that I'd book mine in in similar circumstances. I even went as far as requesting thyroid bloods last year for a slightly lethargic, not-quite-right dog only for the results to come back normal and to be told I was just doing too much with the dog and to give her some time off. :o

Out of interest, how is his colour - are his gums pale?

I wonder if the jumping out of the car and the vomiting and lethargy are linked or not. In a big dog of that age reluctance to jump out if the car is likely to be pain related? Arthritis or similar.
The vomiting that long after eating combined with lethargy would make him a same day app where I work.

Had a blood test this morning, as nothing obvious from physical examination. Raised white blood cells so vet reckons an infection or inflammation somewhere, but not clear where. So trying a week of antibiotics. I'm worried it could still be something more serious :(
We shall see, currently asleep on sofa with me and my baby!

He seems pretty much back to normal after nearly 4 days of anti-biotics- back to his lively self! Don't know where the infection was- but presuming if antibiotics have returned him to his normal character hopefully there will be no further issue. Who knows, he has never been ill before

Well, that is good news :)
