Hi HHOers,

Just purchased a new horse lorry (over 7.5t) - she is registered as a Private HGV.

Haven't quite yet got space to park it at the yard for various reasons, Yard Owners will have cleared a space by next Friday they promise.

Meantime, I'm picking the box up tomorrow & I intend to park it in a large "off road" layby. Said layby isnt a layby as such, its more a piece of waste ground where people park up (some people use it to showcase cars on sale!). Truck will be a good 20ft from the road.

I am just wondering if there is anything, in this case, people will find to pick holes in as they are a picky, ar**y old bunch of idiots in this village at times & I just want to be prepared for the muppets because it has to stay there for the week!

Love the attitude. Hope the owner of the land you are intending to park on enjoys it as much. I think the fact that your YO hasn't exactly wanted to rush around to accommodate your new toy says quite a lot.

Public land....so assuming council or someone like that. It most certainly isnt privately held & is used all the time for parking by others. I just know people love an argument with me though ;)

I'd be worried about vandalism or attempted theft personally

Maybe put a note through the doors of the closest houses letting them know the situation and asking if they would mind keeping an eye out

If they feel they have been informed they are less likely to cause a fuss maybe?

If they are upset chances are by the time they have given it time to disappear then informed whoever it is they plan to inform and THEY have reacted accordingly it will be time to move the lorry anyway!

I think I'd be seeing if a friend would help me out short term and try and get it somewhere more secure

Where did that come from?!

if you do do this, check your insurance carefully. It might well be invalidated being left in a public place. Why not pay half the money and leave the lorry where it is for another week? then you know it is safe.

Guard your fuel. Round here we get the fuel stolen regularly and anyone who puts a locking fuel cap on ends up with the tank drilled. A little further away they prefer batteries so that's the main thing that gets nicked. Occasionally they just nick the whole thing. Frustrating as its exciting to get a lorry and then some twonk nicks your fuel especially the £90 which was to get us to a championship. Are there no local farmers who would let you park it in their yards?

We have calculated the exact quantity of fuel required to reach the vet in an emergency so that is what we keep in it with the tractor parked around a cm from a locking fuel cap. Worked so far though not as satisfying as a shotgun...
