People have always asked me if i am ever going to breed from my mare. She has a severe parrot mouth and i always thought that breeding from these horses is a big no no!
People have mixed views, whats your views?

It can be hereditary! The TB stallion In The Wings was parrot-mouthed, as is his son Singspiel and in turn his son Papineau!

Shareef Dancer was bad too. Doesn’t matter so much with high profile Tbs, who are cared for well all their lives but the trouble with parrot mouth is that the problem also extends to the mismatch of the premolars and molars which makes the horse susceptible to large hooks being formed on the upper first cheek teeth and on the last lower ones in each row. These if not attended to can become so severe that they grind into the bone and become life threatening.
A horse with parrot mouth should have regular and thorough dental care . Some cases of parrot mouth may be preventable with dental care if they are started early around 3 months of age and surgery is possible, in which case an unsuspecting owner would be unaware of the problem and the hereditary aspect would be hidden. I think it’s best avoided if you care about what happens to the offspring as not all end up in knowledgeable homes.

It’s a recessive gene, which means it’s carried silently and only appears when inherited from both parents.

I'm sorry I wouldn't.
We have a 36 year old shetland with an overshot jaw and he has to have his teeth attended to more than all the other horses, it would mean anything you bred would possibly have a lifetime of dentistry.
Any dental deformities like parrot mouth can be passed on so it's best not to breed those horses.

Personally, I wouldn't breed from a parrot mouthed mare. I know of a tb mare who isn't parrot mouthed herself but i know that atleast two of her foals have been, so i'm not sure if it has come from the sire or is a recessive gene from her. It is a common fault in tb's, Lamtara was also parrot mouthed, so it could be quite possible that it has come from the sire.
