We have just taken on a Senegal who is a lovely bird, very friendly and placid. He is 6 and had been kept in a dark corner of a room, and I think his only interaction consisted of scratches through the bars. He's starting to enjoy coming out for free time, but cannot fly. He doesn't feel obese, though he is quite heavy, and I am guessing his wing muscles just aren't strong enough. I prefer my birds to be able to fly free if they want to - any ideas for building up his wing muscles? I have also changed his diet as he was on a horrible cheap sunflower mix, which was basically just sunflower and not much else; he now has pellets, fruit and veg so hopefully his health will improve generally but he does need the exercise....

Does your bird like bathing? or a warm shower? A friend's African Grey exercises her wings when bathing, much like all birds and loves a shower too where she stretches and flaps her wings continually. Perhaps this would help yours, just so long as he enjoys the water of course :)

That's a good idea. He hasn't enjoyed being sprayed or having the chance of a bath, but I suspect that's because he's never had one until now. If I keep giving him the chance he might start to enjoy it. I have tried to use my other parrot as a role model but again, he's so unused to these things it might take a while!
