Part exchange

Has anyone done a part exchange with a dealer before?

I'm looking into doing this with my horse but I'm curious as to how it works.

I understand the basics. You pick a horse you'd like to buy, they take your horse (at less than market value) as part payment and you pay the rest.

But how does it work?
Do they try your horse first?
How do you decide on a part exchange value?
How do you swap? Turn up with horse and swap for new horse?
I'd just like to know the ins and outs really

Most dealers that will do pex will offer you a very low value on the horse, often they build this in to the selling price so that they really give you nothing but it looks as if they have if you see what I mean.
Depending on their preferences they may just get you to bring it with you when picking up the new horse.
If you go down this route, it may make life easier but unlikely to be financially a good deal, you need to still do the purchasing as if there was no deal involved. Make sure you really want the horse you are getting, try it a second time if you can and get it fully vetted, just because they may be taking your horse does not mean they can sell without vetting and warranty and you can trust them no more than you would without the other horse in the equation.

Thanks for your reply.

I hated selling my previous horse. I found it so stressful I would love for the stress and worry to be taken out of it.

I understand that I wouldn't get full market value for my horse but I do wonder how little I would be offered.

I just wondered how the mechanics of the whole thing worked with trying horses, vettings and stuff

If you do go down the pex route to avoid the stress of selling make sure the dealer knows as much about your horse as possible, if the horse is genuine they may give you a better deal or take it and sell for you. Either way price will depend on what you are selling and at the moment the market is very strange, people that are looking cannot find anything and the ones selling are struggling to find buyers, there is always someone for a genuine allrounder with no quirks, it is the horses with issues that are harder to sell.
I do sales livery and it is usually just because the owners do not like the idea of doing it themselves so that may be an idea for you to consider it would give you more options with buying as you can then buy privately if you see something you like.

Thanks again for replying.

The reason I'm debating the part exchange route is because I know he needs work which I'm not good enough to do. I don't think I've overhorsed myself as such but the longer he stays with me the worse I feel things will be for both of us as my confidence is plummeting and he could be so much happier in a difference home.

I could go into full details but I'd rather not. Its something that I don't really want to do but feel may well be the best option.

Sales livery again seems like a good option but tends to be soooo expensive!! He's currently on DIY so the price difference would be massive for me to afford full, sales livery.

It would cost for sales livery but probably not as much as it may cost in real terms by doing pex, why not try getting someone local to help with the selling, possibly on your yard if there is anyone competent that could ride him a bit for you and show him off, if he is just not getting enough work it could help with that too.
If you want to send me a pm with some details of him I may be able to make some suggestions and also there are dealers to avoid which are not allowed to be named on open forum.
