The first time I came close to doing that I had been to the dealers yard and taken a look to see what he had - then he came and looked at my mare. He then offered me less than meat money for my mare - so I told him in no uncertain terms to stick it! I would imagine you would want to go to the dealers yard first to see if they have anything that you are interested in?

The second time I part exchanged my 16.1hh TB x for a 14.2hh welsh cob - so I took the cob and money (it was a friend of my sisters) - and that worked out well (especially as I ended up with the more talented of the two horses!!)

Normally they dont give you very much, so they can make a profit...normally give a bit more than the horse is worth as meat, not all dealers but most. You are better off selling privately

I realise that you won't get much, otherwise it isnt worth their while, but if you want to sell, and can't, I wondered how they did it. I have seen a couple of nice horses and the dealer said she would just look at photos of my horse - I thought that was a bit odd, surely they will want to ride him and see him in the flesh!

Some horse dealers will do like car dealers and accept anything in part-ex for a tiny amount of money covered by what you're paying for the new horse. They either then sell on the horse for a profit or more likely take it to the sales/another dealer. They know horses that come in part-ex for peanuts are hard to sell either due to behaviour or because they won't pass a vet, or you would have sold it yourself for more.

It depends on the horse- I have given up to £2500 for a horse in part ex (as a seller) took pony plus £2500 cash for a £5000 horse but the people buying were honest and genuine and I was sure pony would work be top qaulity. I don't normally like px horses as most people will send you any old crap that they can't handle or has issues and when you only really sell young unspoilt horses and ponies its hard to move them on again. If I am to take a PX I insist on seeing photos, having the horse delivered and then letting me ride it at home before I make an offer or trade. But I wouldn't take "just anything" for PX.

I PXed Zante for Splodge, we agreed £3k for Zante without the dealer even seeing her so when I went to get Splodge I took Z with me and she was ridden for 5 mins, deemed to be exactly what I said she was, I gave £3k cash over and took Splodge home

Dealer got stuck with Z for ages, but I had explained what she was like in 100% honest terms so no skin off my nose!

When I was going to PX P I was going to do much the same thing, dealer didn't want to come down and see her.
