Hi,

I am looking for a livery yard i NW London/Herts and was hoping someone on this board might be able to offer advice! The yard must be within walking or cycling distance of public transport and easily accessible from NW London.

I'm ideally looking for a yard with:
  • Full or part livery, must include grooming, and, if part livery, option of paying for exercise as add-on
  • Daily turn-out
  • School with a good surface and lighting in the evening/early mornings
  • Somewhere to get changed and have a cup of tea
  • On-site instructors
  • Access to off-road hacking

Contact details and prices would be very useful. Also, would be great if you could let me know if you are aware of yards with a short or no waiting list as I am looking to move sooner rather than later. Please PM me if easier.

Many thanks!

Frith Manor or the London Equestrian Centre are within walking distance of Mill Hill East tube or if it's raining there is a bus that will pick you up. Frith Manor does part livery and has a couple of instructors, an indoor, two outdoors and a couple of school horses (maybe 5?), 24 hour t/o in summer and every day t/o in winter. I'm not sure what LEC is like these days as I left there nearly 10 years ago. It is primarily a riding school with some full liveries, beautiful facilities - huge indoor, similarly huge outdoor and little outdoor, some XC jumps. When I was there there was 24 hour t/o year round but not sure now. Both have websites: www.fmec.co.uk and www.londonridingschool.com.
Trent Park Equestrian Centre is within walking distance of Oakwood tube. They do rather expensive full livery or working livery and have nice facilities that you have to share with the riding school so depends if that's your thing. Again, they have a website www.trentpark.com.

Oh there is also Mote Farm which you could cycle to or get the 251 to from Totteridge and Whetstone tube. They do full livery. I don't know anyone who's been there recently so I can't say that much about it (I've been at Frith and LEC in the past if you want more detailed info) but this is their website:

I did look around it once. They had a nice looking American barn, XC course, decent outdoor school, small indoor, changing room (think it had a shower, I remember thinking it was very swish) and they said you could hack in their fields. That was a few years ago so they might well have made improvements (or indeed gone downhill!) since.
Oh yes, Frith has a tea room with a kettle, we used to get changed in our tack rooms or the toilet. You can access a bridlepath behind the yard without going on the roads. Hacking is ok not great. LEC is next door to Frith so hacking is the same only you have to go on the road to get to that bridlepath I just mentioned.
Trent Park has direct access to woods and you can ride in Trent Park from there which is very nice.

If you don't mind moving a bit further out, Elstree and Borehamwood and Radlett both have yards which will be a short bike ride from them or as I used to do a bus ride from Radlett train station.

It depends very much on the type of yard you are looking for and they vary from the cheap and cheerful basic but still doing livery to the seriously expensive but it's a lovely area with great hacking.

Some around Radlett are

Netherwylde
Hill Farm
Model/Blackbirds Farm
Wild Farm
Patchetts

Thanks unbalanced and criso - very helpful!

Elstree and Borehamwood and Radlett might actually be easier to get to from where I live (and the hacking sounds great) so will have a look at the yards in that area as well as checking out the yards unbalanced suggested.

Criso - do you have any experience (good or bad) with any of the yards you mentioned? If yes, would you mind if I PM you?

Again, thanks for your very helpful replies!

I do, I was at Model Farm until recently and I have friends at Hill Farm.
Alot really depends on your budget and the sort of yard you are looking for so feel free to pm me.

And I've been at Frith and known people at Lec and Mote.
