Hi all
Just popping on here to ask for some advice.

I advertised my TB for part loan a few weeks ago and have found someone who seems very nice who would like to take him on. 2 days a week including 1 weekend day. She is returning to riding after nearly 10 years away but is a lovely rider and wants to have lessons on him etc to get herself back into it properly. He is an ex racer who has been mainly hacking for a few years but recently being professionally ridden each week and is green but very willing and improving each time and I'm also having a weekly lesson on him and he's great. Fabulous to hack out and we do have amazing hacking on our doorstep. We're on a private yard....sadly no arena but have a field to ride in so can school in there or hire arenas locally.

No jobs to do as I'm there everyday looking after our other ponies so it's basically riding. I'm proposing asking £20 a week for 2 days and happy for her to do (within reason) whatever she'd like to do with him....lessons, polework clinics, local events etc.....plus £15 towards feet every 5/6 weeks (he's barefoot but now under a podiatrist so a trim is £50 - yikes!!)

Does this sound ok?? I realise good loaners are hard to come by so don't want to take the mick but at the same time he is a lovely horse who could give her a lot of fun and obviously I'd like to try and cover some of the ever rising costs if possible.

That's sounds perfectly reasonable, as we don't have a horse at present my DD has just taken on a part loan for three days a week which is ten pounds a day or one hundred and fifty pounds a month and does include some jobs as the as the pony is on DIY livery.

That sounds right to me. Roughly £10/day seems to be the going rate. It was for me when I shared mine before buying him. And I contributed to farrier costs too.

I am amazed that people are riding for £10 a day. Here in London a share (on full livery) has always cost me about £50-60. The rate is usually the same as it costs to hack for an hour from a local riding school. When my old share was very ancient I rode her gently twice a week and paid her livery costs for those days. However due to my own now ancient age, I am glad to pay more as i get unstinted help in lifting the saddle onto my share and she is held for me while I mount.

I always go by share = pay for riding only no chores
1/2 loan means half the bills livery/shoeing etc
full loan full payment paid by loanee and riding

I suggested what I proposed above but she's come back to me saying too expensive and was only wanting to pay £50/£60 a month. I did say that I was willing to compromise as I didn't want to take the mick and good loaners are hard to find so would she be willing to pay £60 a month......she's read it and not responded all day so guessing that's a no too. Shame as she seemed nice and she would have had a lot of fun on him. Ah well the search continues!!

I think your costs sound more than reasonable OP :)
Sounds reasonable pricing. I’m always put off by expensive shares… after all I’m doing you and the horse a favour
Only if you are quite good sharer ;) I've shared & briefly had a sharer for mine so seen both sides to this.

A bad sharer definitely isn't doing the owner or horse a favour & can actually cost the owner a considerable amount though.

Costs vary so much & yours doesnt sound unreasonable. A friend of mine is sharing through a riding centre and they pay a similiar (possibly higher rate to you) I think. But they have the opportunity to build more of a bond with one horse so works for them over weekly lessons , a knowledgeable supportive network on site who will oversee and can step into help at a moment's notice, nice facilities for horse and rider, always people to ride with, the opportunity to take part in lessons, clinics and on-site competitions with none of the chores or stress of ownership.

If someone was to (hypothetically) share mine, they'd have to bring their own hot drink, contribute to chores, may or may not see anyone else so need to be confident on their own, facilities for rider extend to needing to wee/get changed in his stable and will definitely need a head torch for a light source in the dark (and potentially hack out by head torch in winter) - so not a hugely comparable experience ;)🤣

She has replied and said still too expensive at £60 a month as she'd have to hire an arena as she wants to do more than hack. I did point out we have a large flat field to school in and she did ride him in it when she tried him. I'm disappointed as she was a nice rider but the right person will be out there. Realistically I don't think she will find what she's looking for with that kind of budget as I know other friends loaners pay considerably more for better facilities and I'm certainly not trying to find someone just to make a profit out of them! If anyone in Cheshire is looking for a nice TB to have fun on and hack out in the most beautiful places feel free to drop me a message!!

I think your costs were extremely reasonable.

Tbh I tnink she will struggle to find anything cheaper than what your offering. What your asking is totally reasonable and I'm sure you'll find the right person x

Stick it on the North West forum You may have more luck from there. I'd be more than happy to pay that if I was looking for a nice, safe and sensible loan to have some fun on.

She is being ridiculous. £50/month and no jobs to do, and she's begrudging having to pay for arena hire?! What was she expecting to have to pay for lessons?

£10 a day here but that's on DIY, the grooms charge another £10 if they do the jobs so I think your sharers getting a good deal.

I never understand the share of shoes/Farrier though, why not just include it in the cost?
