Henry is going to be going up for part loan soon and I was wondering how much to charge. He will be up for however many days the loaner wants to do and they can have him weekends, so very flexible, and his livery costs £100 a month. He lives out so I'm happy to do the chores for him, I just want someone who can spend time with him and get him doing stuff. My problem is that hes only little, 12hh at the most, and is 7 so definatly wont be growing anymore. He's also very nervous of new people and will only let me do stuff with him at the moment, he'll let people touch him etc if I'm holding him or have given his rope to them, but they have no chance of catching him alone, so for a while I think I'd have to be there while they are to help them. Also catching him in the field is quite difficult but I've worked out a way of doing it so will obviosuly tell/show them. Another problem is he isnt ridden, he's been lunged in tack loads of times and is happy with that, but not actually ridden, Ive sat on him a few times and hes fine with being sat on just standing there, but when he was asked to walk on he shot forwards reared up spun round etc and basically dumped me. Not sure why but gonna try and make one of them dummy things to put on him and see if its just because he hasnt been ridden for a long time, if at all. So bascially my questions are, how much would I charge the loaner and would anyone even loan him in the first place? If I cant find someone to part loan him he'll go up for full loan, if no one will full loan him I'll have to sell him :( I cant afford to keep him on my own, and the person I bought him with has decided she doesnt want him anymore as she hasnt got the time he needs to spend with him so shes basically given her half of him to me, but is kindly still paying her half until I find someone to part loan him etc. So, can anyone help??

I dont think you can charge anyone to help him with you if he isnt ridden - maybe just advertise for some help - suitable for competent older child but still think you wont get much interest

I forgot to put in there, I'm planning to get him ridden before putting him up for loan I have people who can help me, its just whenever theyre free. So hopefully by the end of next month he'll be getting going with being ridden if all goes to plan and thats when he'll be going up for loan.

I'm sorry, I can't see anyone wanting to loan a pony they can't ride and would even struggle to handle. I certainly can't imagine anyone would pay for the privilege. You may get some interest from a keen teenager wanting to learn horse management though. I would suggest you either sell him (although I would think he would be hard to sell also and worth very little) or send him away to be properly backed. Once ridden, if quiet, he would be much easier to sell or loan.

Good luck whatever you decide.

This is what I thought, but I thought I'd ask and get some advice before I jumped into selling him if there was a possibilty I could keep him. I may put him up for part loan and see if I get any interest, if not then full loan, if still no luck I will sell him. I know he wont be worth much at all as we got him very cheap but I'd rather he went to someone who can look after him, but I worry that because of how he is he will get passed around and also because of his size people would want him for small children to ride and play around with, but at the moment hes not suitable for that at all.

Just had another thought. Why not consider getting him broken to drive? That way he could be enjoyed/ handled by adults. Maybe something worth considering.

I actually hadnt thought of that .. I'll start doing some long reining and see how it goes :D At least then if he can be ridden too then I'll have more interest in him :) thanks! x
