Hi, after a bit of advice. My daughter has been riding for a couple of years and we have recently started part loaning a pony at the riding school where she has lessons. It was a bit of a casual agreement to start so were told the pony was hers for 2 / 3 days a week, we are paying £260 a month. There are times when we go up to ride when she's being used in the riding school or when her saddle is being used by someone else so we have to wait. When I spoke to the owner she said actually we only have her for two hours on our day, and the rest of the day she is used in the riding school. Am I being unreasonable in thinking this is a lot of money for two hours of loan twice a week, and also by the time by daughter gets on she's potentially already had lessons so a bit fed up to be ridden again. Thoughts welcome as we are new to this, thanks

no idea where you are but that seems extortionate! i pay just over that for a months livery for 2 horses!

i’d definitely look for another arrangement with a private owner, but carry on with lessons at the riding school.

ETA: i used to go up early/stay late when i was at a riding school and help with jobs etc, i see no reason why a riding school owner wouldn’t let your daughter muck out the pony she’s having a lesson on, so she’d be getting the same experience from just a lesson

That’s a lot of money for what you are getting. Maybe look for a more private arrangement. We part loan our pony 3 days per week for £100 per month. The pony is theirs in their days 💯

The riding school my daughter was at charged over £500 a month to ‘share’ a pony three days a week. You had to do a group lesson on one of the days (which cost extra), they were closed on Mondays and Thursdays and in the evenings they shut at 6 so getting there after school would have been problematic, you weren’t allowed to jump outside of lessons and there was no hacking at all .. they had a queue of parents lining up to pay for their child’s ‘share’ 😬

They are extracting the wee from you. They can do this because you haven't yet established any links in the horse community. Best thing for you would be to join a local FB group, there are plenty all over the country, and ask if anybody would like help with their ponies or with mundane tasks. That'll get you in, then you'll meet other people at that yard and find out where other yards are and who has a suitable pony to share for about £15 a day. For the whole day, not two hours of a tired jaded pony.

Crazy amount of money. Honestly wish sometimes I could bothered with a loaner or sharer if that’s what people are willing to pay!! 😬 but honestly OP sign up for some local horsey groups on facebook, be honest about you and your daughters abilities and I’m sure you’ll find a private loan agreement that are grateful for enthusiastic help at a fraction of the cost! You may need to take into account paying a private instructor for lessons on loan pony to keep the child progressing, but may end up with better 1:1 instruction and still save money.

Extortionate. I’ve been part loaning since May 3 x days a week, to include jobs on those days, but he’s all mine on my days. That’s £120 a month. Not a riding school, private yard. I’ve now bought him and the month’s part-livery for him (hay/feed/bedding) is a little over what you’re paying. I’d walk away!

ETA: Realised my livery fees are actually less than what you’re paying 🫣

Thanks all, will look in to private loans, it did seem ok for whole days but the couple of hours of a day seemed crazy but wasn't sure of the going rate. I think riding schools probably get away with it. We're in Hampshire but I imagine it's the same everywhere.

We are paying £80 a month for two lessons on top of the loan fee!

Omg 😦 group lessons as well! Hand your notice to them! Look at local Facebook groups and feed store notice boards! You may find private loans expect a little more supervision from you and more in terms of yard duties (ie poo picking, contribution to shoeing costs) but you are likely to be the only loaner and solely responsible for you days. The owner will know local instructors as well or they may be one on the yard. You will need to get riders/public liability insurance for your child but it’s not extortionate and even with all that I think you’d save a fair bit of money!!!

Shame your not in Birmingham we have a few ponies that have loaner on our yard as it’s hard to find kids with the commitment!
