Is this where large groups of riders go out - along main roads to raise awareness?

If so - as far as I can see all it does is annoy drivers who are delayed along a road that they should expect to drive along comfortably at reasonible speeds. Not sure if it actually achieves anything

You make it sound a bit dodgy requesting emails, like it's secret intel ?
Our last one was like this. There was a private FB group set up, which allowed you to invite others, then the admin posted to say please do not invite people, they have to be added by admin (as though it was some secret club!) It wasn’t advertised anywhere else either so as I was added by someone else, I left the group and didn’t partake. I didn’t actually see anything about it so no idea if they did it or not.

This time around it seems better organised so we shall see.

Someone shared the list of rides to a FB group I'm part of - the only one local to me was flagged as being a "private ride" and I found it impossible to get any more information. It was all a bit wierd so I gave up.

That depends on which kind of driver you are, we have done 3 years successful, I live in Cornwall and always seeing tractor rallies, motor bike rallies, getting held up by lots of incidents when it opens up to holiday makers, I except that as a driver and quite happy to have to wait. We are only doing what they do but we can all pull over when needed to let drivers pass, no roads are targeted just roads where the organiser feels it's safe to do so where maybe it's worse than most as in groups we are safer, we are not going out to antagonise drivers, normally there are lots of people taking photos, some love seeing a bunch of horses out and for the few minutes a driver may get held up while we find somewhere to turn into to let you pass generally don't mind. If you are driving a car you need to always be prepared to be be held up especially serving around the furnish roads. We also try to warn locals where we will be going. But no I'm sure it will annoy some as anything always does

**GUIDELINES**
Please take some time to read these guidelines.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask
IMPORTANT – If you feel at any point that you are unable to proceed with organising a ride or drive please inform one of admin immediately.
DO WE NEED TO?
It is entirely up to each ride organiser as to what you decide to do to make your ride both pleasurable and a success. Below is just some of our thoughts on the questions raised previously but it is not gospel.
ADDITIONAL ORGANISERS
Please notify one of admin of any additional organisers you want to add to this group. As it is a private group you will need to invite them to join and we can not approve membership unless you have told us before hand.
SIZE OF RIDE
This can be as small or large as you feel you can cope with
DISTANCE OF RIDE/DRIVE
This can be as long or as short as you feel you can cope with but should include some road work as the whole aim is to create awareness to motorists on how to pass us safely
VENUE FOR RIDE/DRIVE START
Consider if you want people to come in trailers/horseboxes and if so can you facilitate them. Some organisers in the past have arranged a start point for people to meet up at their local pub car park (with the pub owners permission)
MARSHALLS ETC.
This is your decision but you should take into account where you intend your ride to go and how large your ride is likely to be.
RESTRICTED RIDE/DRIVE
Some organisers in the past have made their ride/drives private that is entirely up to you but we ask that you still promote your ride/drive as much as possible. Please ensure however that you inform admin that your ride/drive is restricted
WALKERS/CYCLISTS etc.
We encourage you to invite them to join you as afterall they are vulnerable road users as well
ROSETTES/BANNERS/LEAFLETS/POSTERS
Banners - Mike Mills
Rosettes - Pam Russell
Leaflets - please pm Debbie Smith who will be able to forward you the PDF for leaflets to print
Posters - (awaiting confirmation of these)
You may wish to look at local companies such as tack shops, feed merchants to sponsor the purchase of any of the above and they will receive acknowledgement in PWAS
Please note it is not compulsory that you purchase any of the above but please ensure Pass Wide & Slow Group is mentioned in any advertising or promotions
RIDE FORMS
We have put some examples for forms in files in this group. They are not compulsory and should you decide to use one they can be adapted to suit you
PRESS/TV ETC.
We ask that each organiser contacts at least their local press to get as much coverage as possible for their rides
PHOTOGRAPHS/VIDEOS
Please create an album in the organisers group so any photographs or videos taken before, during or after the ride/drives can be stored so we can use these photos or videos in further promoting Pass Wide & Slow.
Please give the album the name of your ride and number
If an official photographer attends please make a note of their name and ask for permission to use their photographs
Due to the child protection act it is illegal to use photographs of children in promotions or advertising without the parents permission. We have put a section in the ride form where parents can sign to say they do not want photographs of their children using. You don't have to use this form you can create your own.
MAYORS/MPS/COUNCILLORS/FAMOUS PEOPLE
Please contact as many people as possible and invite them to your ride/drives
EVENT INSURANCE
We have been in contact with some insurance companies re the awareness rides to ask about insurance for an event.
As Pass Wide & Slow and ride organisers are not a registered charity or organisation we do not need event insurance as we are just individuals organising our own separate rides, inviting other riders to join us and therefore not classed as an event. We do not have a committee, chairperson or bank account.
What they suggest is all ride leaders, if they want to, could give out disclaimer forms and state on the forms that all riders need their own insurance to join them on the ride.
RISK ASSESSMENT
It is entirely up to each organiser as to whether you want to do a written one or not but we do suggest that you at least check out the route you intend to ride for any potential hazards.
You can google Risk Assessment if you wish to find out more. Organisations or charities that have arranged rides could be approached to ask for copy of their risk assessment forms.
POLICE
It is advisory to notify the police of your intended route so they can decide if they need to attend or not. It is good if they do attend as it shows what the ride is about "PASS WIDE & SLOW"
HIGHWAYS
It is advisory to notify them as well so they can let you know if for example there are any intended works happening on the route.
RIDING IN A GROUP
Please ensure wherever possible and safe you move over to allow vehicles to PASS WIDE & SLOW and remember to be polite and acknowledge them
Please do not rise to any arguments. You are the ambassadors for the Pass Wide and Slow Campaign. One negative action or word can reflect negatively on the group and jeopardise all the hard work we have done
Hope we have answered your questions to the best of our ability but remember like you we are not an organisation. We are just horse riders trying to promote awareness by riding out in a group.
This is your ride/drive, not ours, you have the final say

It is a group we started so we can keep all sides listed, so it is just a group for all the organisers to exchange ideas about their rides. If we open it up to everyone the it would become a hate group as you would get all the against it joining so we ask you to join so we can keep a list if the rides all leaving and share information, it's not secret its just for the organisers of the rides.

We do our best to inform people, we have 2 groups one for pass wide and slow for everyone and one for the ride organisers, all the ride events are shares to the other group we have so all members can find the rides, we are just a Facebook group with limited funds, how would you like us to advertise? This is what we are trying to look into as we have 160 rides but want more, also all these rides are not organised by us, the ride organisers of their area organise them so all we can do is keep a list and share that list. If anyone needs help finding a ride you can contact us on Facebook or email, any help would be great, now I know you are not getting the information you all feel you need I can look into it, thank you

This was just the local group. I fully understand that the organisers group should be private, but not the group for the actual participants. It felt like the ride should be invite only (by the admin only) which seems a bit daft. I’d have thought they’d have been happy to attract people that other horse riders knew.

No it shouldn't be like that, anyone can join or should be able to, a few are private because they have no parking facility's. But most should be open, airey if you were made to feel like that

(From above)

Surely an admin group on Facebook getting as involved as this in how things are done would count as a committee...? I'm not sure you can just sign away responsibility that easily. Otherwise every committee going would just rename themselves as a 'gaggle of enthusiasts' or a 'collective of shared interests' or whatever to avoid paying for insurance

It's a Facebook group, we do not organise any of the rides, the organisers do of their rides. We just keep a list. We have no committee, no bank account so cannot get event insurance. All organisers and all riders have their own insurance. Feel free to find anything either that drives me wrong, it will be considered if we do ever become a organisation

Facebook groups don't typically issue event guidelines....

Anyways, good luck to you with it. Personally I don't think it is a good idea so wouldn't join in, and it does concern me that whether good or bad reactions, it will be seen as representative of the whole horsey community in the local area. So it would be preferable (in my opinion) if it was organised properly in consultation with those in the local area and the police etc.
