I have recently purchased an Irish Sporthorse from a sale, and was told by the vet who came to vaccinate her that her microchip number is not the same as the one in her passport. We rang the chipping vet who said that the vet who had chipped them did a few that day at the stud and suggested a name, but that horse does not have the chip registered. Where do I go from here? I am sending for a DNA kit to see if she is either of the two mares suggested, but there were a few grey fillies chipped that day at the stud. The name on the passport is Porthall Doctor Jane, by Porthall Leo, the irish vet thinks that the chip is in Porthall Sophie. I have tried the usual chip ID's but can't find this chip anywhere/ the number of the chip is 372 141404269391
any help would be really appreciated

I had a similar problem when I bought my youngster - he had come from the sales in a pen of 3, all very similar looking colts, and their passports got mixed up by the dealer I purchased him from. Luckily he knew where my boys real passport was, and it was a simple case of having my colts microchip number checked (to make sure it matched the other passport that had been in the mix up), both me and the owner of the other colt sending both passports back to Pet-ID and having the correct ones sent back. My only real dilemma was what to call my colt - his real (passported) name, or the name I knew him by!
I really feel for you, I was so worried when I foound out I had the wrong passport, though obviously your case is much more stressful! All I can do is sympathise, and say I really hope all gets sorted for you soon. x

I too had this problem when i bought my youngster back in june, apparantly there were 4 coloured colts bunged in a sale ring and a dealer bought all 4 and obviously shipped them off to different homes! since the microchip law was brought in apparantly you dont need the ID chart filled in on the passports anymore so microchip is the only way of telling if this is the right horse,
When vet came to geld him I asked him to scan his microchip against horse and passport, and it was a different number to the one on passport, so I rang up Pet-Id who was passport organisation registered to the horse, they told me to send in the passport to them and that they would contact the person who had the microchip number i had given them for my actual horse and ask them to send back the passport and then if the chip number they had in there horse as the same as the one on the wrong passport that i had then they would more or less "swap" them? so i paid them the £15 admin fee and they sent me the right passport!
Hope this helps!

I had this problem too. During the 5* vetting the vet scanned and realised the chip and passport said different things. However he was adament it was the right Horse with correct passport. Her passport is with the British Skewbald and Piebald assoiciation. I rung them as I wanted to change the chip number. They got hold of the origional vet and he confirmed it was the correct Horse and she had in fact been chipped twice. I now have both chip numbers on the passport so if she were ever to go missing she will be traced to me. Hope you get it sorted soon!

If the horse is ISH registered with the Irish studbook (green or blue Irish passport), you can contact them to check the chip number. Google Horse Sport Ireland for contact.
