I used to keep ponies in, my youth and now in my fifties recently bought 2 ponies locally one from a local traveller and one from a young woman who said she rescued ponies. I knew nothing about passports and bought them both without them. Having been informed about passports by a friend I contacted a vet who came out to sort them out for me. It turns out both ponies had micro chips so I asked the vet if it was likely they were stolen, she informed me there was very little likelihood of finding out as there were many passport issuing companies (I think that's what she said). She seemed unconcerned, gave me 2 forms to fill out, stamped them for me and told me to send them off. I paid £90 for the privilege of this service. This week I received a letter from Pet ID who said one of the ponies was registered with them and already had a passport. They gave me more forms to fill out and required more money. Unfortunately I do not have any of the information they require and I'm in the process of trying to get in touch with them to discuss. My question is..... what on earth is the point of horse Id's if there is no central place they are registered and you cant find out if a pony is stolen and how if someone has a passport for a pony can then sell it without passing it on?? I keep sheep and the passport system is fool proof and computerised. What did I £90 for??
