While we're on the subject of passports...

I thought those of you who remember the Bailey fiasco, and those who are concerned about the issuing of passports at sales might be interested in the following.

No more passports will be issued at Beeston sales!

Taken from the Wright-Manley website (Beeston horse sales).

There are changes here at the horse sale that everyone should be aware of,
firstly we are unable to passport horses and ponies on the day any longer.
This is because Farmkey un fortunately cannot issue passports here at the
Auction as there were too many horses having duplicated passports.
We can not allow any equine to be sold under the hammer without a
passport that includes foals still on the mare.

Well done Wright-Manley, and well done Farmkey!

A victory for people-power and good old common-sense.

I am really thrilled about this news Dubs, as you know!

Hopefully the revision to their passporting stance will now protect horses from suffering a similar fate that Bailey did. Passports were designed to protect a horse from illegal re-sale and theft. While Farmkey were still passporting ringside at auctions, there was always a risk that a "suspect" horse would slip through the net.

The next thing I'd like to see happen is that horses presented for sale are routinely scanned for possible mircochips. This is most definitely a huge step, infact more of a leap, in the right direction.

Thank you.

Well, I'm ever hopeful...

I'm still trying to contact someone at Derby sales, who actually knows what's what, and am also awaiting a response form the Horse Pasport Agency who issue passports at that sale.

Will let you know when I hear something back.

Hey hun, I meant to email you with what I was told about the microchipping system.

Here's what was said to me in an email, by the actual passport issuer at Beeston sales:

The Trading standards representative carries a microchip scanner which
he or ourselves use if required. However if a microchip number was found
in a horse, there is no facility to check this against a register for
passports.

The mind boggles doesn't it??
