the owner of my yard has requested that all liveries hand there horses passports over to her for keeps (my horse is kept on her land ) i live 5 mins from the yard is this correct can someone help and give me a bit of advice??
its my horse so why should she have my horses passport?

H&H issue 6 August had whole double page spread on this.

Quote
"The keeper is responsible for the horses's passport. The keeper may be the owner, loaner, livery yard manager, transporter, racehorse trainer or auctioneer, depending on the circumstances"

Quote
"Under the new rules, the "keeper" of a horse becomes responsible for its passport. This includes livery yard owners where the horse is on full livery"

Does this help?

Yes, this is the correct procedure, although you live close by and is not absolutely necessary in your case, it could be required whilst you are not there.

spacefaer so if the horse is on DIY im there twice a day everyday? does the owner of the stables still need to have it?
i understand if im on holiday maybe i should leave it with her?
i just dont like the idea of leaving legal documents with someone other that myself?

I don't know about DIY - I've looked in the article and it doesn't say.

Best to check with DEFRA (ha)

The only reason I can think why the YO might need them is that a vet has to see the passport before treating the horse. if you were at work or away and there was an emergency, then the YO could produce it quickly.....

NB the passport is not a document of ownership - only ID

Some organisations issue a seperate document of ownership so that protects you in livery yards. Get your studbook or PIO to do the same.
