My new big boy's passport is with the Irish Horse Board. On the website is says that change of ownership is free of charge, but I have just spotted in the passport that the person I bought him from has just written in the passport and obviously never got it officially put into her name - do you think this will be a problem? And here is the other question - my big mare is going to a local loan home, does the original passport go with her? Thanks guys

Passport should definitely go with loan horse although just to be on the safe side, I would photo copy every page beforehand. I'd also pencil in the date and your initials on each page before copying it so there can be no question of it being legitimate if the original should get lost at any stage.

Are you still in contact with original owner or do you have a receipt for horse with their name and address on as that will usually be taken as proof too? Other than that, why not give the passport people a call to check what they need?

Jaylen, I have had this, as an example when I bought one horse, the previous owners had just written in their name and address (I did see their receipt from the breeder). This was with the irish horse register and it was not a problem as they just stamped it with my details and returned it. From my experience passports are not always updated and I have never had a problem with updating them with my details it probably happens all the time as a lot of people can't be bothered to pay or write off to update passports (I don't personally think this is acceptable I just know what people are like.) As MFH says contact the register but I doubt it will be a problem. Also agree with MFH about passport and make sure you do get everything copied just in case, (I have always had very positive experiences with loaning but would also recommend micro chipping if not already done).

I have had this same situation as you Jaylen & Gingerbear.

I bought my new mare 7 weeks ago and her 2 previous owners had just written their details in the passport (Irish Horse Register passport).

I sent my passport off with the completed change of ownership form and they input my details & stamped it & it came back super quick as well (I was really worried about posting it to Ireland)
