If your horse is on a livery yard does the passport have to be kept on the yard with the horse or can the owner keep hold of it?
Mum has said that as long as the passport can be produced with in 3 hours then it doesn't need to be on the yard. Is this right?
I work on the yard that one of my horses is on and I live 5 mins from work so I can produce the passport if anyone asks with in 10 mins.

I work for Trading Standards (the authority who check passports) as an animal health inspector, and yes your mum is right, a recent change in the legislation states that a horse must have its passport with it at all times, impractical I know, but it can be produced within 3 hours, so Im sure you would be fine if you were ever asked to produce it.

Why not get a certified photocopy of the passport to keep at home?
That way the passport can stay with the horse. Or the other way round if you prefer, although that doesn't really comply with the legislation, I think it's what I'd do in view of some of the posts there have been about possession of passports being considered proof of ownership by the police.

In the UK, do YOs have a record book that they enter all comings and goings in?

The person who keeeps the horse is rsponsible to see that it has a passport and alivery yard owner must have possesion of the passport by law.
