Does anyone know how old you have to be to be put as the owner of your horse on the passport? Are there any teenagers (16 and under) that have a horse with the passport in their name? Thanks :)

I don't think you can legally own a horse under 16 you might be able to get the passport company to put the name on it as I don't think they ask for your DOB but you could find yourself in hot water 'if' it was every checked. Personally I would put it in the parents name them gift the horse to them on there 16th birthday.

Im 16 and the vet wouldn't allow me to be put as the owner on the passport even though I work for my money to pay for her and I worked to get the money to buy her so she's now in my mums name, I'm just a little confused about the age rates

I got my first horse at 15 and he went in my mums name, since then when I've swapped horses they've gone in mine but you definitely cannot put your name in the passport if you're under 16.

I recently searched for the answer to this and no one could tell me definitively.

The law re animal ownership is that a child under 16 cannot buy an animal without parental consent.

I phoned defra for clarification about owner age on passport. They checked into it but said there was no guidelines on this. I spoked to our passport provider and they said they were happy to put it in my daughters name (she's 15).

I also checked with my insurance company and they said it caused no problems for them, as in I can be policyholder but my daughter is horses owner.

As a passport is not considered proof of ownership then the age of the "owner" listed in the passport is probably irrelevant.

My daughter is 15 and her horses passport is in her name and has been since she was 13. It's with the Irish horse board so don't know if that makes a difference or not but as it didn't ask for the age of the owner I didn't give it when transferring ownership?

Our SJ'er is Irish Horse Board and they were adamant my daughter (now 15, then 13) could not be listed as owner until after her 16th birthday. BSJA would not have allowed it anyway - neither do BE. I suspect the only reason Winking Willow was able to is that they don't ask the age. But the restriction is clear in their rules. However - as a previous poster said - the passport is not proof of ownership in any event.

I am not sure about BS but BE do not care who is the owner on the passport only who is registered with them as the owner, they have registered horses from my yard as owned by whoever is paying the registration with no questions asked, several years ago I asked them about it and I think the response was something like "we are not here to police the passports" as long as the horse is correctly passported they are happy, plenty of horses are loaned and compete or belong to an adult unrelated to the rider so it would be difficult to check who the horse actually belongs to in the true sense.
